A BSF soldier and a villager were killed in a skirmish at South Ramnagar, close to the Akhaura land port near Tripura's capital Agartala on Friday evening.
Angry villagers say they resisted the BSF when the border guards stopped an elderly villager Ismail Mia from going to a pond situated just next to the barbed wire border fencing.
Hearing heated arguments, other villagers rushed to the spot, after which a BSF personnel started firing indiscriminately.
As villagers dived for cover to save themselves, some were hit by bullets.
Later the BSF personnel Sandeep Kumar of its 195 battalion committed suicide by shooting himself, the villagers said.
Meanwhile, nine villagers were admitted in the G B Panth hospital while few others were reported missing.
Three of them were said to be in serious condition, says GBP hospital doctors.
One of the injured villagers Nanu Mia said: “We were out of our house to cool ourselves as there was no power at that time.
“BSF guards probably objected to few children going close to fencing. Then one of them ran amok and started firing indiscriminately when elders protested. Many have been injured here.”
Meanwhile, angry villagers complained that the BSF soldier was drunk.
Police recovered the body of Ismail Mia who died in the firing.
Incidents of skirmish between border guards and villagers in Tripura that shares 857 km border with Bangladesh is not very common in spite of many villages being located just on the border.
