What's new

Britten Norman Defender AEWS

.

damn that thing looks weird. doesnt even look airworthy. why not mount the radar on the top like an AWACS?

.
It looks smiler to what the Israelis have done to their AEWS such as the falcon radar

Yes, it looks very similar to the Phalcon radar. Even the size of it. The Norman is small thats why it looks that big.

.
It looks like its not going to be able to bear the weight and nosedive any minute.

I don't think they can do that without major structural changes, its a very small platform.

That's probably a bigass radar in that nose!

Yes it is! IIRC the Comet based Nimrod was the first aircraft to experiment with 'bigass, big nose' design:

The picture you have up is the older version of this aircraft. the newer version is much more slimline.

Britten-Norman

Also the Nimrod was canceled and the RAF got E-3's

.
norman defender i think is for coastal defence. its not a heavyweight like E3c, erieye etc

.
neo - the nimrod has been heavily upgraded and atleast 3-4 examples are still in service with the RAF. however u r right their main AEW platform is the Boeing Sentry E3C

The Nimrod AEW never entered service. The Nimords in service are different ASW and surveillance.

The fiasco of the AEW model is listed here.

BAe Nimrod AEW 3

. .
the Pak Coast Guards operate the Britten-Norman BN-2T-4R DEFENDER for coastal surveillance. does anybody know about their operational status?
