British aircraft carrier ‘HMS Eagle’ tried to intervene in 1971 India – Pakistan war

Apparently Russia did have an ulterior motive in engaging in the 71’ conflict..excerpts from the RUSSIAN PACIFIC FLEET

The first major appearance of Soviet sea power in the Indian Ocean came in 1971 during the war between India and Pakistan. That was the first opportunity taken by the Soviet Government to demonstrate its willingness to influence major events in the area by the use of military power. During that crisis, SOVPAC deployed two task groups, comprising the cruisers Varyag and Vladivostok, the destroyers Vozbuzhdenny and the Strogiy, six submarines (including two SSGNs), plus a number of support vessels.167 A group of
Il-38 ASW aircraft based at the Aden air base in Yemen provided support.168 The initial mission of these forces was to monitor the activities of the RN (the carrier HMS Eagle, the commando carrier HMS Albion, several destroyers and other ships).169 After the
British force left the region, Soviet attention turned to USN Task Force 74, headed by the USS Enterprise. Since the Soviet Government seriously considered US intervention against India a possibility, Soviet task groups in the Indian Ocean were given orders
to deter the Americans from engaging in the conflict by shadowing their activities and demonstrating aggressive intent. This demonstration of increased naval strength in the Pacific created a ‘force multiplier effect’ for the Soviet Union. Throughout the 1971 war
the US naval forces remained largely uninvolved in the conflict, while Soviet-Indian relations further strengthened, particularly in the security sphere. Adding to that, the USSR was able to increase its political influence in India.

After the end of the conflict between India and Pakistan, the Soviet Navy participated in port-clearing operations in Bangladesh, where a 22-ship strong force commenced operations in April 1972. While the main objective of this action, gaining political influence in the country, was not achieved, it showed the capacity of the Soviet Navy to use non-coercive methods while employing naval power in influence-building activities.

I don't know enough of the history, but things here seem a bit odd... the U.S. has traditionally wanted to have friendly relations with BOTH Pakistan and India, but conflicts and tensions between those two nations make this very difficult.

It goes back to WW2 when the Allies were battling Japanese expansion into Burma and threatening India. By 1971, the U.S. was deeply embroiled in Vietnam, which was taking 95% of our military attention. I'd put the odds on seeing actual U.S. combat units in action to be nearly zero. It might have been a logistics mission, or a simple "fly the flag" show of force, but I strongly doubt the U.S. would have engaged in combat. The same for the USSR vs. the U.S. The stakes were too high, and throughout the cold war, direct combat between these nations was seen as tantamount to starting WW3, to be avoided.

It was a show of force that overshadowed Soviet presence in the Bay of Bengal. Task Force 74 comprising the USS Enterprise, USS Tripoli, USS King, Bausell,Orleck,McKean,Anderson,Decatur, Parsons and several nuclear attack submarines remained in the Bay of Bengal for a month following Pakistani surrender. Task Force 74 assisted Pakistani evacuation from East Pakistan.

Task Force 74 arrived a day before formal surrender and did not influence the war in the east. Its presence in the Bay of Bengal deterred escalation of the conflict into Western Pakistan.

All though it is awsome to read about all this and now there is no doubt regarding Russian involvement in 71'... but I have 1 doubt...

I think During 71' war it was USS Kittyhawk in the bay of bengal and Not USS Enterprise... Kitty was having 75 fighters jets on board and was visible with even naked eyes from Culcutta Port...

I hope above News article is talking abt same battle group.... Kitty hawk at that time was in Japan( stationed at Japan)

Correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,

Ginger

We already took revenge from USSR in 1991, they break us in 2, we break them in 15 pieces plus their economy came to ground. Lesson for the world "Never try to mess with Pakistanis".

Lots of Love to the US,UK & China.:china::pakistan::usflag:

Yup you messed with us in 1971 with the help of your master russia & RAW's terrorist wing in Bangladesh, where as we were fighting alone in a territory locked by enemy & its master from all land routes, sea routes & air routes. But the lesson we gave was is 1991, that's why after trying alot India did'nt dare to attack Pakistan in 2002 & 2008.:azn:

You messed with US:eek:.........................somebody's having high on drugs.:rofl:

So what if you were landlocked on all sides?? I thought 1 Pakistani = 100000000000000000000000000000000 Indian kafirs, why couldn't you break through?

Also, what lesson did you give in 1991? I am really eager to know.

Why do we have to attack you? You are attacking yourselves in Waziristan/FATA/Pakthunkwa. When your enemy is busy killing themselves don't interrupt the party :bunny:

Yep, when U.S. told us to stop invasion of East Pakistan, we gave them the middle finger, and we continued until we captured Dacca itself.

Present-day Pakistani government should learn from Indira Gandhi. They are allowing U.S. drones to kill thousands of innocent Pakistani villagers in tribal areas, while the Pak Army is carrying out U.S.'s orders like a faithful dog. What shameful creatures :disagree:
