QUETTA: Pakistan has closed its border with Afghanistan indefinitely after a group of Afghan demonstrators attacked the Friendship Gate at Chaman and set the Pakistani flag on fire, it emerged on Friday.

The incident that took place on Thursday evening has resulted in suspension in the movement of trucks involved in trade shipments between the two countries and carrying supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Sources said that a large number of Afghan nationals, celebrating the 97th anniversary of their country’s independence day, gathered near the Friendship Gate after marching through the streets of the Spin Boldak town across the border. They carried placards and banners inscribed with anti-Pakistan slogans.

Shouting slogans against Pakistan, the Afghan demonstrators started pelting the Friendship Gate with stones, smashing windowpanes of the building.

Exercising restraint, the personnel of Frontier Corps avoided taking any action against the Afghan protesters who swarmed the gate after seeing Pakistanis who had staged a protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks about Balochistan the same day and were dispersing.

The Afghan demonstrators snatched the national flag from a Pakistani protester who stood close to the Friendship Gate and set it on fire.

The Afghan demonstrators also tried to force their entry through the gate which had already been closed because of the Afghans’ rally.

“The Friendship Gate at the Pak-Afghan border has been closed after the flag burning incident,” a senior security official said.

“The border with Afghanistan will remain closed for an indefinite period,” security officials deployed at the Friendship Gate said on Friday. “We will not open the gate until orders to do so are received from the high command,” they added.

Hundreds of containers and trucks, carrying Nato supplies and goods for Afghanistan and Pakistan, were stuck on both sides of the border.

“No consignment of fresh fruit and other goods could enter Chaman from Afghanistan while the same situation exists at the Pakistani side,” said Kamaluddin, who runs his fresh and dried fruit business in Chaman.

Every day between 10,000 and 15,000 Pakistani and Afghan traders cross into Chaman and Vesh Mandi in connection with their business in the border towns.

“Not a single trader crossed the border from either side on Friday because of the closure of the Friendship Gate,” Niamatullah, a resident of Chaman, told Dawn by phone.

According to the sources, security has been heightened at the border after the flag burning incident as more FC personnel had been deployed there to meet any eventuality.

This is how they were spending their independence day. Are they happy now? We closed that pass for an indefinite period and the biggest joke is that their so called security force didn't do anything to stop them.

India and Pakistan have wagah border where a parade happens everyday but you don't see this crap bcz the two nations are civilized enough to not do this at border crossings..

Burning the Pakistan flag in front of Pakistanis is an unforgivable act and the gate should be closed for a long period of time.

Afghanistan has always hated us. We have made far greater peace progress with india then we ever did with Afghanistan. They have brought war on us in the 60s as well went against the creation of Pakistan. We need to stop seeing Afghanistan as a brother nation and look to man and control the border while returning their 5 million burden on economy.

I am surprised that due to their barbaric nature they didn't start shooting at the gate.

Further proof that majority of Afghans dislike Pakistan for it's support to Taliban

Read this carefully and you would see its their love for Modi and not hate for taliban that forces them to hate Pakistan

Exercising restraint, the personnel of Frontier Corps avoided taking any action against the Afghan protesters who swarmed the gate after seeing Pakistanis who had staged a protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks about Balochistan the same day and were dispersing.

And further proof that if they don't come back to their senses their supply of Atta, daal, sabzi, chawal, fruit, cheeni, ghee, pani is going to stop anytime.

I don't why Pakistan is trying to maintain ties with bastard Afghanis, close the border & expel their Embassy from Pakistan, until ties are fixed by Afghanis. Also deportation process of all Afghanis should be paced up & they should be kicked out of Pakistan.

As a signatory and member of WTO Pakistan can never do that to a completely landlocked country, whatever may be your compulsions. If you did, Pakistan will be totally isolated globally. First try and understand the ground reality before chest-thumbing. :p:

Yes as if we all value world this and world that strictly right? Pakistan did stop Nato supplies to a landlocked country once.

By the way invading a landlocked country multiple times, killing their innocent citizen, destroying their infrastructure is fine but stopping their daal chana is wrong

And isolation of Pakistan globally in what terms?

no sir its majority of northern alliance. majority of afghans are pashtuns which are not a part of current afghan government or forces and are supporting afghan taliban. your statement shows that majority of afghans 60 percent i.e. the pashtuns love pakistan because of its support to taliban.

Compatriot, I know of Afghan pukhtoons who hate Pakistan living in the UK.
One thing that all ethnicities of Afghanistan are united on is their jealous hatred of Pakistan. Now of course there are some Afghans who are okay with Pakistan but they are a minority.

BS.
Large number of Pashtuns hate Pakistan vehemently.
BTW Taliban controls or has significant influence in only 30-35% of Afghan territory.

Also Pashtuns are only 41-42% of Afghan population(though that doesn't matter as vast majority of Pashtuns hate Pakistan).

You are right these Punjabi "Khattaks" don't get it Pashtuns hate them vehemently.

@naveedullahkhankhattak you Punjabi understand Pashtuns hate you.

Keep it closed lets see if modi sends them any supply if not make those bastard go down on their knees and make them beg! Thats what baniya would have done we should play humabtarian game and give them supplies and limited quantites enough to keep them under our leash!

Win win for us!

best opportunity to start the expulsion of Afghans from Baluchistan
they can join these guys who should take care of them from this point after they are done with protesting

If this is what Pakistan does to brother nations - what you have done to Afghanistan - brought them nothing but death, destruction and mass killings, then it is better to have Pakistan as an enemy than as a brother nation.

Sure, we forced them to indulge in bacha bazi. We forced the Afghans to hate each other and resort to tribalism. We forced Afghans to destroy their economy by growing opium which also destroys many Pakistani lives. We forced the Afghans to flee to other nations like a coward instead of rebuilding their nation. We forced the minority Tajik/Uzbek to discriminate and disregard their majority Pashtun brothers. We imposed the Northern Alliance warlords onto the people of Afghanistan who have kept them backward and abused their rights. We imposed brutal oppressive Northern Alliance warlords who don't care about human rights and oppress their own people including women. We turned a blind eye when Northern Alliance thugs abused their own children infront of our eyes and our army generals told us to ignore this. We forced the likes of spineless Karzai and Ghani onto the people of Afghanistan who couldn't bring peace and stability for their people and kept blaming others around them. Instead, they hid in their fortress away from the common man and enjoyed US/NATO protection. We provided millions in coffers to Afghan leaders to buy their loyalty and serve our interests. It is all Pakistan's fault despite Afghanistan admitting that our influence has diminished to zero. Fantastic logic.

This is what I propose. Pakistan is evil and entirely responsible for every misery to ever have taken place in Afghanistan. India who is the savior and superhero of Afghans should step up to the plate and take in all Afghan refugees to take away their misery. Deal?

Afghan government is a puppet and ungrateful.

Our government should deport the refugees immediately.

Chaman border will open soon and drugs guns and all types of illegal items would be transported into Pakistan
