17 killed in bomb attack on Saudi police at mosque

CAIRO: A “terrorist” bomb targeting a mosque used by Saudi police killed at least 17 people Thursday in the southern city of Abha, state television El-Ikhbariya reported.

The explosion took place as worshippers were praying at a mosque used by Saudi special forces in Abha, the broadcaster said, describing it as a “terrorist” attack. It gave no further details.

The mosque served a state security unit called the Special Emergency Force, and all those killed were members, the channel said.

The attack killed or wounded a number of people, according to the online edition of Asharq al-Awsat newspaper and reports on social media. Reuters could not independently verify those reports.

On May 22, 20 people were killed as a suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia during Friday prayers.

Later, on the same day, Islamic State group said in an online statement that it carried out ‘a deadly suicide bomb attack at the mosque in Saudi Arabia’s predominantly Shia Eastern Province’.

Similarly on May 29, four people were killed when a car exploded near a Shia mosque in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, but authorities said militants failed in their bid to hit the mosque itself.

Deadly suicide bombing hits Saudi mosque

At least 17 security officers were killed Thursday after a suicide bombing targeted a mosque used by the emergency forces south of Saudi Arabia, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

The incident took place in Abha, capital of Asir province.

In July, Saudi Arabia arrested 431 people as part of a crackdown on a cluster of cells linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group.

It is not the first time a mosque is targeted in Saudi Arabia. ISIS claimed responsibility for the May explosion at a Shiite mosque in al-Qadeeh village east of Saudi Arabia during Friday prayers, which killed 20 people. ISIS was behind a bombing in al-Qadeeh in Qatif province, which also targeted Shiites to stir sectarian strife in the country.
