Bollywood challenges Hollywood in Russia — RT

Russians have enjoyed Indian films during the time of the former Soviet Union but Bollywood still rules the heart of many generations. And today, Indian films are coming back, bringing with them a new modern style, based on the old traditions.

Russians will have an opportunity to rekindle there romance with Indian cinema during a week long festival of Indian golden oldies. The movies were popular in Soviet times and now a new generation of young Russians are interested in Bollywood. Nowadays films are more Americanised, but before, there were a lot of Indian films.

After the collapse of Soviet film distribution system and eventually its takeover by Hollywood it became extremely difficult for Bollywood movies to enter into the Russian market.

“I would like to see more modern Indian films and I think it will be great if they were more promoted and more shown on the cinemas and on TV,” said viewer Katya Grishenko.

In the wake of renewed interest in Bollywood the young Russian cinema goers want not only the serious art movies they also want to be entertained by the song dance glitz and glamour of Bollywood. And today Russians can have it all.

In the downtown Moscow there is a lovely studio of India TV. This is where all the programming is made: Bollywood straight out of Russia. Made in Russia India TV is the answer to Bollywood for the Russian masses.

“The statistics shows that the channel is popular not only in Moscow but also in the other regions of Russia and CIS,” noted Roman Stolyarsky, CEO of the India TV channel.

Culture Wars do matter in strategically important countries like Russia.

Bollywood makes the most virulent anti-Pakistan movies and if this is how Russians are exposed to Pakistan and Pakistanis, then it will be very tough to foster good relations with Russia and win over the Russian people.

See what Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says about Indian Bollywood:

We have a 24-hour channel for Hindi movies, says Dmitry Medvedev

“Indian cinema has been and continues to find many loyal enthusiasts in Russia where we have dedicated 24 hours channels which screen Hindi movies,”Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told
an august gathering of top captains of Bollywood at a 45-minute long meeting organised by Red Chillies at the Yash Raj Studios in Andheri on Wednesday.

“Our country is one of the places where Indian culture is most admired,”
he said, soon after Yash Chopra welcomed him to the state-of-the-art film enterprise set up in 2007.

“Your visit to Yash Raj is a tribute to Bollywood, which continues to inspire and entertain many Russians. And, Raj Kapoor remains one of the biggest overseas names in Russia till date,” Chopra said.

Among the other top Bollywood honchos at the meeting were Mahesh, Vikram and Mukesh Bhatt; Ramesh and Rohan Sippy, Rakesh Roshan, Manmohan Shetty, Randhir Kapoor, Amit Shah, Nitin Desai and Shah Rukh Khan. Randhir Kapoor invoked his father’s memories to a round of applause.

“Our family has always held Russia and its special friendship with India in high esteem,” he said, adding, “The love that people in Russia have shown for Raj Kapoor saab and his work has always filled us with pride.” Amit Shah asked Medvedev, “While it is a matter of pride that Indian films are shown on a 24x7 channel in Russia, when we can expect some revenue from the movies that are aired?” to which the president said, “We will definitely see how things can be worked out to mutual benefit.”

On Medvedev’s invitation to Indian filmmakers to Russia for shooting and opening of film institutes, Mukesh Bhatt said, “It will be of great help if the Russian government created a single window facilitation,” to which Medvedev agreed to look into.
