Boat capsizes on lake in Pakistan, 10 dead

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — A small boat carrying local tourists capsized on a lake in southern Pakistan on Monday, leaving 10 passengers dead and another three missing, police said.

Usman Tanveer, a local official, said the boat on Keenjhar Lake was overcrowded. He said rescuers are still searching the water.

Such accidents are common in Pakistan, where rickety wooden boats are often used to transport goods and people on rivers and lakes. Most operate without life jackets.

Additional information

The motorboat was ferrying 10 women and three children, along with the boatman, from the banks of the lake to the shrine on Noori Jam Tamachi at the lake's centre.

The bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the lake by local divers.

According to the police, the bereaved families, belonging to Mehmoodabad, Karachi, had arrived to the lake in a bus.

The lake is a popular tourism spot, attracting most of its visitors from the provincial capital, who often make their way there on day trips.

Sorry for the lives lost.

Aren’t there any Pakistani companies that can build small ferries and boats that can safely transport people around these lakes?

Why don't they teach every child in Pakistan to swim? Also life jackets should be compulsory on every water bound craft with public in it. Why don't they ever learn?

No one wants to make the investment. Locals can't afford it and don't have the concept , Gov the investment doesn't justify the returns.

Good Lord, Allah bless them as shaheed.
Again, lack of safety, no life jackets etc.

Correct.

Can't the navy tie-up with a private organization to build tourism boats ?

Boats arent an issue here. its a huge lake where local fishermen moonlight as boaters.

These arent bad boats but those narrow types with high speed motors which race on the boat filled with tourists/families.

Usual tourist type boat.

The shrine is smack in the middle of the lake and to be honest the massive lake alone can scare you to death, specially if you dont know swimming.

RIP.

Isn't it advised not to travel during monsoon season?

I suppose for many people the eagerness of visiting the shrine surpasses any question in the mind about asking for safety measures such as a life jacket. Maybe they even may not know of such a thing. They simply may trust in the capabilities of the boat operators.
