They will support Greece no matter what, but their hands will be tied if Greece fires the first shot. It will legitimise a militaristic response from Turkey.

If Turkey fires the first shot, they will openly and aggressively support Greece. If Greece fires the first shot their ways of supporting Greece will become constrained.

I think the map above makes a lot more sense than both countries maximalist positions.

There is no way that Greece can have EEZ borders with Cyprus as a result of arbitration.

Consecutively, there is no way that Turkey can surround with EEZ a Greek island in the Aegean proper (like some Mavi Vatan maps show) as a result of arbitration..especially since Greece can always move to 12nm for borders under UNCLOS (if push comes to shove), thus locking the Aegean once and for all.

Unfortunately, both positions above are considered political poison for the governments of Greece and Turkey at this time juncture.

Greece doesnt have rights in the Eastern Mediterranean by international law .. Greek Islands dont have 200 nm of Continental Shelf ....... only 12 nm of territorial waters .. nothing else

and Egypt doesnt have right for the deal with Greece .... because of Greece and Egypt have no mutual sea border.
( but France,Greece,Egypt,The Uae and Greek Cypriot side have forest law , instead of international law)

Both countries are doing everything in their power to get the maximum of their claim on the negotiation table. The military drills, the Oruc reis NAVTEX, Egyptian posturing and etc. Its all so that we can inevitably reach and accord, because thats the only way this is going to get solved. Both goverments have clearly indicated so.
