A blast at a market in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore killed at least five people on Thursday and wounded 21, a rescue official told Reuters.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear. Security forces cordoned off the area and people were not being allowed to leave or enter.

“Forensic teams have arrived on the scene and we are verifying the cause of the blast,” Punjab police spokesman Nayab Haider said. “There are casualties and injuries but we cannot confirm figures as the rescue operation is under way.”
Moments later, a powerful explosion hit near a second upscale market in Lahore , a government official said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Initial reports after the first blast on Pakistani television channel Geo News said a generator had exploded but reports at the scene speculated that a bomb had gone off, based on the extent of the damage.

Pakistan has been struck by a wave of terrorist attacks in recent weeks, killing at least 130 people across the country and leaving hundreds wounded.

A witness who works at a bank in the market told Reuters that his workplace was shaken by a “frightening” explosion.
“We left the building and saw that the motor-bikes parked outside were on fire and all the windows in the surrounding buildings were shattered,” the witness, Mohammad Khurram, said.

Just came back to office after hearing RANA SANAULLAH statement that it is not a terrorist act and it is a chemical related accident and therefore not a problem at all!!

Pathetic!!

You need a concentration of 1600ppm for a dust explosion to occur. The building was ventilated so you can rule out a dust explosion.
There are ball bearings reported in the blast so what do you think it is ?

I'm not on site and so it would be inappropriate for me to comment. Let's wait for the report from the police/army.

But just FYI cylinder and other non-terrorist blasts can and have killed just as many people... so the casualty count is not necessarily an accurate measure of the nature of the blast in this case.
So you think that any other blast except bomb blast can't take lives? A generator is a bomb too.

Generator is intact on rooftop. It can take life but nature of wounds would be different and destruction scale will be minimum as compared to this destruction.

Pakistan needs to be more assertive with its neighbours. Pakistanis are being targeted on all fronts.

They market is a concrete and glass jungle. An explosion which shatters glass can easily cause very many serious injuries due to flying glass.

The police seem on TV to be less convinced that it was a bomb.No smell and no burns.
