Big 3 proposal: BCCI threatens Bangladesh

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has threatened Bangladesh for its position against the Big 3 proposal on test cricket to the International Cricket Council, reports Indian Bengali daily Anandabazar.

“If you [Bangladesh] do not agree, the Indian cricket team would not visit Bangladesh to play T20 World Cup. We will also withdraw our team from the Asia Cup,” BCCI President N Srinivasan said.


“We will see what you [Bangladesh] do afterwards,” he warned.

According to Anandabazar, India is pressurising Bangladesh the most among all full members of the International Cricket Council.

The ICC meeting where the decision regarding Big three proposal is to be settled is due to be held on Tuesday in Dubai.

In more recent developments, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka have asked for a deferral of the "position paper" proposals being pushed through by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB, the three richest and most powerful cricket boards.

The proposal is likely to bring about structural changes in world of cricket if it were to be passed; however many see it potentially hampering the globalisation of cricket.

India is the biggest proponent of the proposal. It needs votes from seven countries to get passed; since, according to the ICC constitution, eight votes are required to bring an amendment.

As Srinivasan could not go to Dubai to attend the ICC meeting, two Indian officials spoke to Bangladesh officials on his behalf. Bangladesh didn’t seem to be convinced however, when speaking to Srinivasan over Skype.

Anandabazar says, while talking to Bangladesh officials, he threatened to withdraw the Indian cricket team from the T20 world cup and Asia Cup.

Since the proposal had been brought, Dhaka saw cricket fans protesting it.

Anandabazar says, similar pressure made Zimbabwe, New Zealand and West Indies to support the proposal, quoting Zimbabwe official Peter Chingoka, who says India promised them funding which the country’s cricket board is in need of.

Yes, I think it was very chauvinistic statement. In reality the Indian batting lineup might tear up BD bowling same as the Sri Lankans did in the last test, if not less.

But coming to the topic, BD's test status relegation, technically a termination, is a matter of time. It would be victim of either (or both) dismal performance & ICC politics. By siding with the Big-3 they have ensured just that. If the resolution passes they would have only few years of test status left with them. The Big-3 would invite & tour BD in next two years as promised, but that would be it. They would never play a one-on-one series with BD again, not even an ODI or T20I, not unless its an ICC event. Let's face it, BD is not much of a financial attraction. The Middle-3 (Pak, SA, & SL) too might not play BD after what they have done (along with other reasons). So, after sometime the Big-3 would reintroduce the relegation clause & it probably will be passed 8 to 2 votes. Also if the draft passes BD might not able to hold any of the major ICC events in the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, if the draft fails BD would hold on to its test status for a longer time. The only problem being that neither the Big-3 nor the Middle-3 might show much interest in playing them here on. With them not playing much of tests (or ODI & T20I series) relegation system would again be a matter of time. So I guess they nailed their own coffin when they sided with the Big-3.
