Not short term its a long term burden.De controlling the price was a wrong move to help petroleum giants.

no Marxist it was necessary because subsidies had reached unsustainable level.

Like what our PM said

Decontrolling of fuel prices necessary for good of country: PM
By Ashok Dixit, Onboard Air India One, June 29 : The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, said that the deregulation of petrol prices was a much needed reform, and suggested that a similar exercise could be considered for the prices of kerosene and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) with adjustment.

Interacting with media onboard Air India One while enroute to New Delhi from Toronto, Dr. Singh said that the decontrolling of fuel prices had been effected after things had got crystallised in the government system.

"This was all necessary, considering the very high amount of subsidy that is implicit in the pricing structure of kerosene and LPG. We have taken due care to ensure that the poorer sections are affected to the least possible extent, and that is why, the attempt to keep under regulation the prices of kerosene and LPG," Singh said.

He said further decisions on deregulation would be taken up as per government system norms, and people would know of them as and when they took place.

When asked whether the hike in fuel prices had been taken under some sort of pressure, the Prime Minister replied in the negative.

"There is no pressure on the Government of India from any quarter. What we need is to do the right things by our country. The subsidies for petroleum products have reached a level, which is not connected to the sound financial management of our economy. So, it is taking into account that this decision has been taken to put some burden on the common people, but I think, it is manageable," Dr. Singh said.

When asked to comment on the opposition to the fuel price hike, Dr. Singh said that while he had heard of it in the press, he had not talked to anyone, nor had been briefed by the political establishment.

He said that in taking the step to adjust petroleum prices, the "people of India would appreciate the compulsions which have compelled us to undertake this measure. And, our people are wise enough to understand that excessive populism should not be allowed to derail the progress our country is making, and for which, it is winning international kudos as well."

Controlled petrol prices will always remain an albaross around the neck of an elected government.Especially in a nation like ours where mos governments are cobbled with the help of a lot of alliances such a system will only slow down decision making process. And any way passing the buck to petrol giants whats wrong with that they provide better employment and oil field development opportunities

Further the government can always check them with taxing and operational liscence policies

Government will interfere if prices soars heavily.
and the celling may be $120/barrel

I'M a common man support this harthal for its genuine reasons

Basic cost of petrol per liter 16.50 +center tax 11.80 +excise duty 9.75 +state tax 8.00 +vat 4.00.total cost 50.05.now extra 3.00 rupees

all political parties do harthal in our state.
Funny you should mention that.
a) The Left itself puts taxation as THE method of raising finances so the breakup that you have shown is largely due to the left.
PLUS,
b) It was the left that ensured the PSU enjoyed a monopoly on refining and distribution for a long time. All the inefficiencies in the system is also your own doing.

This is the kind of Hypocrisy that I hate the most and the reason why I want the left to be wiped out of our landscape. You were in power at the centre for FIVE whole years and you did nothing to rationalize the taxation on fuel...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. You had no problems letting consumers pay 20+ Rs. a Lit for five years and More but thought that a deal with the americans was worth pulling the government down? Now you're in it talking against price rise just because it looks so cool.

Its utter shameful and waste of a precious day in the nations life and will only make a daily labourers life more difficult.

There are better ways to protest against the govt. than calling for a bandh.

Please Ban all these bandhs.

A judgement has been given by supreme court calling the bandh illegitimate

Ask the common man , not the party workers or enthusiasts, you will be amazed at what you hear.

Its not government rising prices, the fuel prices are always dependent on the global crude oil prices.
People are more at trouble because a day of earning is taken away from them of the working days.

And the communists are the greatest culprits of these harthals, in our state ( yours and mine).

The actual price of Petrol at India's shores is Rs. 16 per liter. Govt imposes taxes of Rs. 34. So, this is bullshyt that prices are decontrolled.

Compare the prices of petrol in india and in US and compare the income of people also. On one hand, these petroleum lobbies are scuttling any efforts at incorporating biodiesel and ethyl alcohol that will help local economy and on the other hand they want to increase the prices of petrol and diesel.

Look at the tax structure in india. A product undergoes multiple taxes before it reaches customer. Govt. also should look at these before unleashing its economic fundas on hapless indians.

So, peaceful strikes give vent to the people's anger. A common man does not earn Rs. 80,000 per month plus all sorts of benefits like an MP.

Harthal and bandh are democratic way of protesting against the rise of fuel price .....

sometimes i just wonder do common ppl in India really know that the prices they pay is so less when compared to countries around them or are they just getting carried away with politics ?

And harthals, Bandhs are not really encouraged by the people because it causes more inconvenience. There are other genuine ways of showing discontent,

And ppl should come to a realization that they themselves are responsible for the way things are.

As expected the Bandh has turned to be a violent one and the early estimate of losses amount nearly 2000Cr. Hope the bandh enthusiasts are happy with their voices heard by destroying public property.

Then ask the Marxist ruled states of kerala and West Bengal to take away the state taxes and VAT which amounts to around 12 Rs and give relief to people.

2000 cr gone down the drain because of this bandh. The only purpose behind this bandh was to demonstrate the firepower of the political parties.

No purpose whatsoever has been served.

Vegetable supplies were affected because of the bandh and now today evening and tomorrow the vegetable vendors will make a killing and demand exhorbitant prices due to supply shortage.

Fcuk these parties, the common man will suffer even more now.
