BGB personnel to be quizzed

Sun, Apr 29th, 2012 10:58 pm BdST

Dhaka, Apr 29 (bdnews24.com) — The investigation committee formed over the recent cash scandal has been allowed by the home ministry to visit the BGB headquarters at Peelkhana and interrogate the personnel concerned.

"The committee will visit the BGB headquarters this week to investigate the incident," committee head Abu Taher, also the Railway Division director general, told reporters at the Rail Bhaban on Sunday.

Taher said the home ministry had informed the BGB headquarters about the visit and directed it to provide the committee with all sorts of assistance.

"Those who were present at the BGB headquarters when the incident took place will be interrogated," he said.

In the wee hours of Apr 10, an unaccounted-for Tk 7 million cash was recovered from the car in which general manager of Railway Division (East) Yusuf Ali Mridha, railway minister Suranjit Sengupta's assistant personal secretary Omar Faruq and Government Railway Police (GRP-Dhaka zone) commandant Enamul Haque were seated.

The government later suspended Yusuf and Enamul and fired Faruq over the scandal.

From the beginning of the incident, Faruq has been claiming that the recovered money does not belong to him.

However, several newspaper reports said the money was taken as bribe for making appointments in the railways.

Veteran Awami League leader Suranjit resigned on April 16 as the railway minister in the wake of widespread criticism over the scandal.

Expressing satisfaction over the investigation progress, Taher said: "I expect to submit the probe report on May 13."

The committee officially began its function on Apr 12 and has been asked to submit the report after 15 working days, he added.

The deadline, however, has been extended by five days.

Five quizzed

Taher said the committee has interrogated Faruq, Yusuf and Enamul, Yusuf's car driver Mosharraf and bodyguard Habibur Rahman.

He said Mosharraf and Habibur submitted their written statements on Sunday at the Rail Bhaban.

If necessary, he said, those linked to the incident could be interrogated again.

Driver of APS told to appear

"Faruq's car driver Ali Azam has been ordered to appear at the Rail Bhaban at 10am on Monday," Taher said.

He said a notice had been published in newspapers and a letter sent to his address asking him to appear on Monday.

Azam remains missing since the incident.
