As I said, Asylum seekers are free to come, and the government will provide them with whatever support they can, depending on whatever resources we have, and the citizenship will be awarded on a case to case basis.

As long as their life is not in danger, they are in a better environment already.

No, it just means they can't avail free healthcare at government hospital(unless an emergency). They ll have to pay for the services. Just like Medicare is not available to foreigners in Canada.

A country as populated as India can't be handing out passports to every Tom, Dick and Harry (Hindu, Christian whatever...). The whole point of a refugee is that they're seeking refuge from elements in their country until they can go back to live in a stable environment.

I don't think Asylum should be given on religious basis at all. If someone is facing persecution and is seeking asylum, should be provided with citizenship, be it Hindu, Muslim or any other religion.

The problem in the eastern region isn't really about government giving them citizenship, rather illegal aliens getting fake/forged documents to prove their legitimacy.

In Pakistan Hindus are treated badly by some uncivilized and uneducated people. The Hindus flee to India, where they are treated equally as bad, but it's by the government.

The difference is India doesn't proclaim itself to be the last bastion of Hindu's, so a Pakistani refugee is viewed as a refugee not as a hindu or a muslim. Due process has to taken for any refugee to get citizenship. And being Hindu majority doesn't mean just bcos they are hindu they would get special treatment. Thats the strength of our constitution.

Emotionally we may feel for them as they are Hindu, but in the eyes of the state they are refugees from Pakistan.

Till 1964 - it was easy for people on either side to migrate. Asif Iqbal - the Cricketer who learned his cricket in Hyderbad but played for Pakistan by easily emigrating comes to mind. Then Pakistan launched its Operation Grand Slam - and put an end to movement of people. India takes in a lot of emigrants - taking in Hindus from Pakistan should not be a burden. However, considering they are from Pakistan - obviously due diligence needs to be done.

Counting on them is pretty stupid - I wonder if there can be a mechanism for these Hindus to approach Western Consulates and Embassies. But I think India needs a law like how Israel has "Right of Return" - all Jews can return to Israel and seek citizenship. India should do something similar for the Hindus.

Their plight in Pakistan is deplorable but India has never sent out an invitation for them to seek refuge, and is it a crime in reporting events that's happening in neighboring countries.
