What's new

Beautiful Islamic names for boys!

there are Quranic names and then there are just Arab cultural names both in Arabic-
So that would mean there is no such thing as an 'Islamic name' .. 'Quranic name' would be the closest, but there is no requirement to choose a Quranic or Arabic name.

lets look at like this-
during islamic growth in old times every non muslim converting to islam kept his traditional or cultural names-
Zaman jahlia Omer remained Omer after embrasing Islam Zamana Jahlia Khalid bin Walid remained Khalid bin Walid after embrasing Islam-
this changing of names according to arabi culture is an uncessary addition Muslim follow religiously for some reason-

a new convert Mark Twain with his birth name could be as much muslim or more as a born Muslim Mohammad ullah-

What's an "Islamic name"? (my apologies if this question has been asked and answered already)

Do we actually mean to say "Arab names"?

Does the Quran have a list of names that are the only ones allowed for use by Muslims?
I already made a clarification that by Islamic names the names derived from the Holy Quran or Islamic History (Isa, Moosa, Yaqoub, Yahya, Omar, Usman etc) or Arabic names with meaning such as Arhaam, Aashir, Aarish etc

Names with their origins in Latin or Gaelic etc also have 'meaning', so why restrict ourselves to Arab names? I'm not saying there's something wrong with choosing Arabic names, just that the impression has been created in Muslim societies that it is a requirement, when it clearly is not.

I know it's not a requirement...

I often say to my family that one day if I have a daughter, I might name her as "Xenia" ... a Greek name

But this is not a discussion here. This thread is about Arabic/Islamic name and the reason the word Islamic was specifically mentioned is that some people would start giving suggestions of Rahul, Vinod, Sanjay and it doesn't fit with the name of Muslim child.

The term 'Islamic name' used in the thread title is misleading, hence the direction of my posts.

The term "Islamic Names" suggests that there are certain names that are allowed in Islam and others that are not. I couldn't just let a misleading term like "Islamic Names" or "Muslim names" go unchallenged.

As you and others have pointed out, a better way to say this would be "Names in the Quran" or "Arab Names".

I made the same observation much earlier in the thread, but was told to keep quiet about it by the OP. So I did. :D
