BBC: Why are India's air force planes falling out of the sky?

. .
But you must understand that we have an abnormally high rate of crashes compared to USAF, VVS and PLAAF.
In 2012-13 the IAF 0.22 crashes per 10,000 flight hours, amongst the lowest crash rates of any AF anywhere on this planet. The figures for 2013-14 haven't been released yet but there wasn't a significant jump in the span of 12 months so last year's crash rate is also likely to be relatively low.

The issue is that any crashes in India (due to the "flying coffin" saga involving the MiG-21s) receive disproportionate and sensationalist coverage from the Indian media (and apparently now the foreign media). Also note that the IAF is one of the largest AFs in the world operating vast numbers of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft (many of them well past their originally dictated life spans) so the number of crashes will always be high and certain "journalists" will continue to fail to take this into account.

. .
Indians claim Su 30 to be the best fighter in the region, keeping this in mind and witnessing what has happened either the indian pilots need some proper training or Su 30 is another plane that still has much to prove.

. .
As much as it saddens me to say (I used to be a big fan of the BBC) it certainly seems there is some not-so-covert frustration with the IAF vis a vis their selection of the Rafale fuelling this all. I very much doubt had the EFT come out L1 that we would have seen an article as venomous as this one directed at the IAF and one so full of inaccuracies and sensationalism.
By the way- India has signed NOTHING with France/Dassualt regarding the Rafale so that is a blatant LIE.
Not just IAF - BBC and Guardian seems to have it in for India in general. See the Mars orbiter coverage for typical behavior - India does something we never could, BUT they are still poor, naked and toilet-less.
India Mars Mission to Launch Amidst Overwhelming Poverty

It's just the sahibs waking up and realizing the world has finally completely slipped from their grasps. They owe China too much money so can't hit out at them, so India is the easy target.

And it's sad 'cos both BBC and Guardian are such good news outlets otherwise.

Strangely, US media coverage of India is much more positive, even from the likes of Fox news.

. .
Not much reality. With the MMRCA deal still going on (even though it have been announced that Rafale is the winner but we all know there are some things that still can change a lot) BBC cannot be considered an unbiased source.
Just trying to make fun of Russian equipment, cheap sales man ship nothing much more!!

.
An utter fallacy.

Then sir, you have not been reading any news for the past 5 years.

Or heard the defence puppet speaking till last year in Lok Sabha. Replacement for MiG-21s were due since 2008. Not one replacement still in.

Please request you to track all the number of crashes we had in the last 5 years.

Why does one need an IJT? This in itself is a falsehood and a requirement left over from when the Hawk AJT deal looked dead in the water. There is no issue going from the PC-7 MK.2 BTT to the Hawk Mk.132 AJT- none at all (many AFs in th world operate like this, no other major AF in the world uses the BTT, IJT, AJT model ) especially not when you factor in the increased use of simulators today.

As I've proven to you (providing FACTS) with the IAF's crash rate in 2012-13, there is not anything especially alarming in the IAF on this front other than the need to replace the MiG-21s and 27s ASAP and even on this front the IAF has done a decent job of getting MiG losses down.

Its not misrepresentation of facts as some Indians here are calling. Its a fact.

Depends on what you consider as facts!

Fact - IAF has a high sorty rate for the fighters, which logically increases the risks of accidents

Fact - IAF operates Su 30s for more than 16 years, lost only 5 of them in that time and most of the accidents were caused by human errors

Fact - IAFs crash rate is getting lower with every year, based on the official figures given by the Defence Ministers in front of the Lok Sabha

2012 report to Lok Sabha - 33 x fighters lost in 3 years = 11 per year
2013 report to Lok Sabha - 29 x fighters lost in 3 years = 8.25 per year
2014 report to Lok Sabha - 19 x fighters lost in 3 years = 6.3 per year
IAF lost 19 planes, 11 copters in three years

Fact - the reduction of the crashes are caused by improved training of pilots, better spare support of the OEMs and more importantly by phasing out older Migs and inducting modern fighters

Fact - accidents happens all over the world, since the biggest contributer for that remains the human factor, no matter how well you are trained. All you can do is, to try to reduce them to a minumum and IAF as well as the MoD is doing well in the recent years to improve the situation

It is because indian air force is no way near the professional level of world class air forces like IDAF (Israeli Air Force), PAF (Pakistan Air Force), USAF (United States Air Force), and RAF (United Kingdom Royal Air Force) etc.

indian air force is big..bulky...slow...force with bureaucratic burden, corruption, and incompetence.

Facts speak for themselves.

PAF is operating F-16s for over 34 years now! How many crashes?

PAF's latest JF-17 Thunder has done 15,000 flight hours+ and only one crashed (that too, due to human error of ground staff)...

I wish Pakistan and india were friends...We would love to train indian pilots and ground staff so there is no loss of life in india.

Where was your Air Force when the American came to Abbottabad. haha!! you and your country is nothing but a Kaput !!

Indian dhotis/lungis set on fire. Damn.

How in the world they made you a "Think Tank"" I have been following you for sometime.. All you do is troll... Dude! you must have a real sad life.
