Defense contractor deems trials of its LORA system a success, striking pads with ‘utmost precision’ from 90 and 400 kilometers away

The Israel Aerospace Industries defense contractor performed two tests with one of its short-range ballistic missiles at sea on Tuesday, successfully hitting floating targets at two distances, the firm said.

The Long-Range Artillery Weapon System, known by the acronym LORA, was fired first at a target 90 kilometers (56 miles) away and then at a target 400 kilometers (250 miles) away, IAI said.

“Under both scenarios, the missile was launched to its trajectory, navigated its course to the target, and hit it with utmost precision,” the company said in a statement.

The firm said the trials were conducted at sea for safety reasons and that the launches were done remotely due to coronavirus restrictions. They were fired from aboard a ship, but using a land launcher and with a command and control trailer nearby.

“Both the weapon system and the missile successfully met all of the trial’s objectives,” the firm said.

The LORA system completed its first trials in 2017, also at sea, ahead of that year’s Paris Air Show.

The missile was developed by IAI’s Systems, Missiles & Space Group, also known by the Hebrew acronym MALAM, which is best known for its air defense systems, including the Arrow 2 and 3 and the Barak 8.

According to the company, the LORA has a range of 400 kilometers and is accurate to within 10 meters.

Both Israel and Azerbaijan are believed to operate the system, though IAI has expressed interest in selling it to other countries.

“The complex trial, performed under COVID-19 limitations, demonstrated the advanced capabilities of both IAI and LORA, our strategic missile system. The trial was executed according to a fully functional design, which tested the system’s maneuvering, strike, and precision, as well as technological developments and enhancements introduced by our engineers,” said Boaz Levy, an IAI vice president and head of the Systems, Missiles & Space Group.

Why they would cover a 400 KM range missile test ????
Perhaps to target Hezbollah in Lebanon.

For a country like Israel which has no strategic depth, even a modern 30 KM artillery should be, and is, covered.

The surprisingly accurate strikes of Iranian Short range Ballistic missiles in Iraq have shown the importance of such weapon systems. A few weeks after the Iranian attacks, Pakistan also started testing and modernizing the Ghaznavi Ballistic missile to increase accuracy.

As direct attacks on cities are getting increasingly off-limits due to nuclear/conventional deterrence, ample amounts of accurate rocket artillery, and short range ballistic missiles are becoming indispensable.

Sir I second your views.
I believe every addition to arsenal has an impact on a region`s security. In fact, that is the sole reason that weapon is produced or acquired to achieve an edge or superiority over the adversaries.

Threat Perception = Estimated Capability X Estimated Intent.

If any of the above goes unnoticed or is downplayed, it can result in dire consequences.

11 Missiles missed, one failed to explode on impact and one fell 20km away from the intended target, out of 17 missiles.
Zero US casualties. If anything it shows you can't rely on ballistic missiles alone.

This is debatable. Different news agencies have reported different numbers.

Zero US casualties.
Now this is an attempt to downplay the damages inflicted by those missiles. If no casualties, there was brain damage to more than hundred soldiers.
But again, limiting damage to humans is not justified when there is infrastructural and assets-related damage as well, which is mostly the priority in hard targets.

That`s true. I agree. So goes same for any weapon when it is used alone. But the objective of attack makes the assets move.
Iran only wanted to inflict a limited damage. They didn`t want to escalate it to war. Otherwise, while the US troops were hiding in bunkers with their drones up in the air that had also lost connectivity, a ground offensive would have proved detrimental as they were sitting ducks.

Last time I checked ballistic missiles are meant to kill.
Almost all soldiers that were shocked as a result of the attack returned to service shortly after.

Purpose of the attack was a revenge for Qassem Sulimani. They have not achieved it. Not at all.
Ground offensive is highly unlikely as there were no Iranian forces nearby.
