Akash missile test fired at low altitude

What's the science behind Akash radar detecting and destroying Cruise missiles at such low heights? I mean if it was possible, why America had to develop JLENS just to defeat cruise missiles, they have far more powerful radar to detect low flying objects

Raytheon Company: JLENS

The advantage of Akash is it is a beam riding missile, that is, there is no on board active tracking sensors and it relies on the feed from the radar station to locate and destroy the target. Hence, we can use different kind of radars to engage different sort of targets, based on threat perception. And no change is required on the missile front.

As ground based radars are not all the time suitable for tracking and engaging low flying targets, Akash can be coupled with an aerostat radar system for maximum efficiency.

An Aerostat radar(which India already has both indigenous and imported) and can detect a low flying object at a significant range unlike Ground based radars.

Though Akash missile system will might be able to neutralize low flying cruise missile like Babur a few km from Akash launcher(as proven by recent tests)..and it might work well as long as the incoming cruise missile is conventionally armed.

It will not be very effective were a nuclear armed cruise missile is brought down and triggered near the SAM base.

If coupled with Aerostat, such SAMs can intercept the cruise missiles at significant range...which is what American have done, by coupling real time data to from fixed Aerostat radar to its SAM system in form of Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System.

Its in service with the IAF, IDK about the Army though

Has also just entered IA service. Even the LR-SAM project for the IN has leaped off again and most of the work is now done.

That cow is for good luck no? :D

anyway..awesome!

HeHe, the cow was to be for dinner..........but it was cow itself that was lucky, got away just in time. ;)
