Need some help with what is a good brand of basmati rice to buy. Here we have limited choice but it does get repackaged into local super market brands. I tend to buy in 50kg bags from Johannesburg.

Personally prefer one brand i found - Falak; I tried another from India (I think Tilda which i found in Gaborone) was not happy - but then again there is so much being passed as basmati.

For daily use, prefer to use jasmine rice from Thailand.

Any input is appreciated.

I do not know but you compare jasmin rice with basmati rice? I made that mistake some time ago and bought jasmin rice I was so unhappy with it.. it feels like basmati without any kind of the good basmati flavour..

I did never look at other brands except super market things.. maybe I should look after brands test it and let me surprize because I remember the first basmati rice that my wife cooked my whole flat smelled like basmati :) I just thought it was that first time expirience :D

No no.

We use jasmine for daily use but basmati for certain rice dishes - different purposes. For basmati, i buy around 200kg at a time and store it to get it aged further to around 3 years before using it; a complete cycle. Yes - 200kg.

Ones we get here:
1. Tilda (found it lacking in basmati aromatics).
2. Falak (very good)
3. Minar (good) - no longer available.
4. India Gate (ok)
5. Zafarani (was good over 14yrs back, but now not good).

Rice pudding is good with jasmine - especially broken one; it is better than basmati.

Yes wife makes dolma when we have fresh grape leaves in the farm but do not put rice; just sheep meat.

My brand is Elephant brand:
This Basmati rice stands out for its unique aroma and taste which tango with your taste buds.
Basmati (long grain) is specially used for Biryani.

For me it is this:

Since I am health conscious, I rinse rice 3 times to diminish its starch/carbohydrate contents.
If I am out in the Chinese joint, I order little rice with more chicken/beef/pork curry/stew.

I even bought this brand in Oslo Norway.
