Bangladesh's Summit eyes Bhutan power production

Bangladesh's Summit eyes Bhutan power production | Business Recorder

Bangladesh's leading privately held electricity provider, the Summit Group of Companies, plans to build a power plant in Bhutan, Chairman Muhammad Aziz Khan said on Sunday. "At the moment we are surveying to identify the bottlenecks and potentials to set up a power plant in Bhutan with 500 megawatts capacity," Khan told Reuters in an interview.

He said that Bhutan was a potentially rich source of hydro power and added: "If we could reap the potentials, then Bangladesh would be able to meet up its much needed electricity requirements."

Summit plans to produce an additional 750 megawatts of electricity with imported liquefied natural gas over the next three to four years, and produce another 676 megawatts (MW) of electricity by the year 2014.

"We have already signed a deal with Chinese firm First Northeast Electric Power Engineering Company (NEPC) on Engineering, Procurement & Construction for about $220 million for implementation of the Bibiyana 341 MW combined cycle power project," Khan said.

The Bibiyana combined cycle power project will generate 341 MW of electricity by June 2014 at the lowest tariff of 1.90 taka per KW hour, Khan said.

No transit for BD's power through India. India should not sell off its sovereignty for BD's benefits.:hitwall:

Well that will be Bhutan's power and Bangladesh will buy it at the border :cheesy:. As a landlocked country, Bhutan is bound to get transit facility. India can not do anything about that!!!

India can always say no to the transit of power unless Bangladesh allow India transit route through Bangladesh.

Fine, only Bhutanese trucks are allowed through Indian territory. Ship as much electricity as you want through them, while paying up:devil:. Why should Indian infrastructure be used for BD's sake?

India is not land locked and what you are saying is not transit but corridor for that 1st of all it require enough infrastructure and India should pay for it along with a transit fee including maintenance charge.

For Bhutan's sake :cheesy:... You can ask the money from Bhutan which they can charge that from Bangladesh. At least Bangladeshis are not miser like Indians which want free transit.

Do not worry. BD has the key and knows how to make India nod to its wish. We will just stop water transit through BD sea and river system. It will bring India to its knees and allow Bhutani and Nepali electricity through the Chicken Neck.

You do know that we can buy all the power that Bhutan produces and cut Bangladesh off from the deal. We have the demand as well deep pockets that you can't match.

Good point. Now finally Bangladesh has some leverage against India in the form of transit that you can use for negotiation. You have to credit Sheikh Hasina for this. We will be happy to provide transit for electricity as long as Bangladesh continues to allows transit of our goods.

Comeon @Eastwatch....your expectations are quite dramatic....It is really entertaining....Anyway...as per my view...India should always fascilitate everything that bring profit and prosperity to Bhutan and Nepal.

Bringing India to knees is just your day dreaming. :cheesy:

The whole news is about a Bangladeshi company setting us a infrastructure project in Bhutan. Good on them. Potential to buy electricity from Bhutan is a side issue yet it gets hindutva trolls angry.....

India should pay for transit. BAL days are numbered so free lunch going to end soon.
