US Federal Reserve 'bomb plot' foiled by FBI

The Federal Reserve is the central banking system of the US
US officials have arrested a man for plotting to detonate what he thought was a massive bomb in front of the Federal Reserve building in New York.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, of Bangladesh, travelled to the US with the intent of planning a terrorist attack, the FBI said.

Mr Nafis was arrested after he allegedly attempted to detonate what he thought was a 1,000lb (454kg) bomb.

There was never a threat, the FBI said, as Mr Nafis had been closely watched.

Mr Nafis is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaeda.

Mr Nafis travelled to the US in January 2012 and sought out contacts to help him with the attack, officials said in a complaint filed in New York on Wednesday.

One of the people he contacted turned out to be a source working for the FBI, US federal prosecutors said.

Targets proposed
Mr Nafis was placed under surveillance, and the undercover FBI agent sold him 20 bags of what he thought were 50lb of explosives. The suspect then bought and assembled detonators and timing devices.

Officials said there had never been any actual threat.

The arrest is the latest in a series of so-called "sting" operations run by the FBI and anti-terror authorities in the US.

The Federal Reserve building, housing the US central banking organisation, is located in downtown Manhattan in New York City, blocks from the World Trade Center complex in the city's financial district.

Federal officials say Mr Nafis proposed several targets, including a high-ranking US official and the New York Stock Exchange.

In a statement intended to claim responsibility for the would-be attack, Mr Nafis allegedly said he believed the most efficient way of destroying American was to target the US economy.

The Bangladeshi, who was living in Queens, New York, reportedly told uncover FBI officials that he had overseas connections to al-quaeda.

What we should blame is what kind of family and society produce such stupid idiot to damage image of all Bangladeshi's.

If he really have done it with that intention then he should be kicked at the butt for giving such a bad name to Bangladesh. From now on Bangladeshis will be also seen in a bad light in USA. But one thing I can not equate how he found contact to secure explosive and how it turned out to be FBI informer. What was in his mind!!!

Or he could be just a brain washed by the wahabis...

Its a case of entrapment. FBI yahoo's are in mosques and other places looking for such suckers and they got lucky and found one. Anyways all fault on this stupid kid, and his stupid parents who could not keep an eye on this idiot so he could be brainwashed by some extremist in a mosque. These cases are well known. I guess we need to get more active from the community to prevent this kind of brainwashing, so they don't hurt the image of the country and its diaspora community. I think kids should be prevented from going to mosque to prevent this kind of extremist brainwashing. As a diaspora community, it also shows our failure to properly bring up children and young men.

Federal authorities Wednesday arrested a 21-year-old Queens man with grandiose plans to shock America -- even disrupt the presidential election -- after he tried to detonate "what he believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb" at the Federal Reserve in lower Manhattan, the Department of Justice announced.
Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a Bangladeshi national who entered the United States "in or about January," faces charges of attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, federal prosecutors said. He arraigned in Brooklyn federal court and detained.

"The explosives that he allegedly sought and attempted to use had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public," U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch of the Eastern District said in a statement.

At some point, Nafis allegedly talked about killing a high-ranking American official, but the complaint did not name the target. At a meeting Sept. 27 with an undercover agent, Nafis said "that he hoped that his attack would disrupt the upcoming presidential elections," and even boasted that, "You know what, this election might even stop."

Nafis wanted to kill himself during the attack, but an undercover operative posing as a supporter convinced him that the al-Qaida leadership wanted him to use a remote-controlled device to set off the explosives.

The criminal complaint sketched the outlines of a plot that developed over a period of months, including a meeting between Nafis and an undercover operative in Central Park in July and meetings on at least two occasions in Queens hotel rooms.

The complaint said that those meetings were recorded by the undercover.

U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) said Nafis apparently was motivated by an al-Qaida magazine called Inspire.
"The FBI took him seriously," King said. "I don't know if he was smart or dumb. But anyone motivated to buy explosives to blow up the Federal Reserve in Lower Manhattan has to be taken seriously."
Nafis and the undercover picked up the explosives Wednesday from a warehouse outside Manhattan, and Nafis armed the supposedly explosive device before entering Manhattan, the complaint said.

The pair parked their van near the Federal Reserve building and walked to a nearby hotel, where Nafis put on sunglasses and videotaped a statement meant for the American public, the complaint said.

"We will not stop until we attain victory or Martyrdom," Nafis said, according to the complaint.
He then made telephone calls to a cellular phone planted inside the van that he thought would trigger the explosives, the complaint said. Agents entered the vehicle and confirmed the calls had been placed, and other agents then arrested Nafis, the complaint said.

"Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure," FBI acting assistant director Mary Galligan said in a statement. "The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences. It is important to emphasize that the public was never at risk in this case, because two of the defendant's 'accomplices' were actually an FBI source and an FBI undercover agent. The FBI continues to place the highest priority on preventing acts of terrorism."

Why all these drama was done for months??? Should not he be arrested right away!! Plotting to detonate bomb is a big offence and he was trying to blow up an important place like FRB... and why the FBI operative tried to convince him that Al Qaeda operatives want to use remote control bomb???

Is this the first time you heard about undercover cops? If you just arrest one guy (say a drug dealer) , you cant arrest the whole chain of people that support him.
One has to be patient and wait for some time to net important members. This time it was a stupid lone wannabe but it could have led to uncovering of a plot too.

Are you that clueless, its their job, entrapment is legal. The details are not important, the most important thing is that this kid had intent to do harm and he acted on it. Who helped him, gave him advice matter very little if anything at all.

This is not the first case, every year there is one or two cases like this where FBI is the adviser, instigator and facilitator, all they need is a stupid effing idiot who has been sufficiently brainwashed to have intent.
