Pakistani or Bangladeshi, it doesn't matter, I count him as one of "us". Let us just rejoice in the fact that someone brave decided they were going to take no nonsense from the Israeli or Indian air forces, both of which are world renowned. Even the USAF gave him top honours!

Well said. I think his being a East Pakistani or West Pakistani is immaterial. What matters most is his own talent and even more importantly the credible training system he was put through which brought out the flying excellence in him. Credit goes to the person and the system equally.

Another PAF pilot from East Pakistan that was reputedly a good pilot but who disappeared in mysterious circumstances is Flying Officer Waleed Ehsan Ul karim. We dont find his mention in history books and official websites. He was involved in Run of Katch operations in April 1965.

It is said that his F-86 crashed into Arabian sea 10-15km off the coast of Pakistan at night while he was returning from a recce mission. I was amazed how he was doing recce at night with F-86?

My brother in law was a Major and he faught for Pakistan in western front. He was one of the sharpest and graduated with Ziaur Rahman. As he sided with PK, when he returned, he was not given the same rank as his batch mates. So he had to leave the army later on!!!
I also saw a Bihari guy got Bir Prothik medal for the role in 1971(saw on the TV).

That guy was given Bir Shrestra medal (best seven who lost their life) for his role on that particular occasion. BD government broght his body back last year after 36 years of his death. We had an intense negotiation with PK government. I wonder how you guys are unaware of that. No media coverage???

I don't think you have any logic behind saying that. Most if not all Bengali officers were grounded during 1971. The reason was pure racial discrimination and the common sense that if Punjabi and Pathan generals ordered the troops to massacre Bengali population(which they did), then those Bengali officers might defect(many did). The highest number of gallantry awards won (17) in 1965 war against India was by East Bengal Regiment. Why would the West Pakistan generals assume that those talented Pakistani officers might defect if the general knew what they were doing was morally right?!!!

Flight Lieutenant Saiful Azam has the unique distinction of having kills against air forces of two different countries. As a young Flying Officer during the 65 War, Saiful Azam scored a kill against an Indian Air Force Gnat, in recognition of which he was awarded Sitara-i-Jurat. Two years later Saiful Azam became the first Pakistani pilot to score against the Israeli Air Force in the 1967 Arab-Israel war. He shot down a Vatour Bomber, a super Mystere, and a Mirage IIIC, all in only two missions thus raising his tally to four kills. To-date he remains the highest shooter of Israeli aircraft in history of dogfight.
He has been highly decorated with gallantry awards by both Jordan and Iraq for his extraordinary display of skill and courage. He retired as a Group Captain from Bangladesh Air Force. In 2001, he was honoured by the United States Air Force (USAF) and enjoys the status of being one of the twenty two 'Living Eagles' of the world.

Saiful Azam was the guest of honour in the Golden Jubilee of PAF Sargodha in 2003 and I happened to find these pictures on the web He went to Sargodha from Bangladesh with other Bengali ex-Sargodhans.

Flt. Lt Saiful Azam - Bengali Fighter Ace

Flt. Lt Saiful Azam was an ace fighter who fought for three different counteries during three different wars and emerged as the only fighter pilot in the world who has been awarded a state medal by three different countries - Pakistan (Sitara-e-Jurat, 65 war), Jordan (Husame Isteqlal, 67 Arab-Israeli war) and Iraq (Noth-es-Shuja, 67 Arab-Israeli war).
During the September 1965 India-Pak War, Azam was flying F-86 Sabres with 17 Squadron from PAF Base Sargodha. On September 19, 1965, after successfully executing a ground attack strike, his four ship formation led by Sqn Ldr. Azim Daudpota was "bounced" by Indian Air Force Gnats. In the ensuing fight, Azam shot down one of the two attackers, a Folland Gnat, and let the other aircraft go after sensing it had surrendered. The pilot of the Gnat, F/Off. V. Mayadev, ejected safely to become a PoW.
In November 66, he was deputised along with another PAF pilot Flt.Lt. Sarwar Shad, to fly Hunters with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, when the 67 Arab-Israeli War broke out. On June 5, 1967, while flying from al Marfaq, he shot down two israeli Mystere IVs, distinguishing his abilities in the air.
Two days later, on June 7, 67, after being seconded to the Iraqi Air Force, the israelis struck H-3, an airfield in western Iraq where he was based. This time flying an Iraqi Hunter, he downed a Israeli Mirage III and later a Vautour bomber. He was so close to the Vautour when he shot at it, bits from the aircraft were embedded in the Hunter. Many of the Iraqi air crew at his base, when he returned, believed he had rammed the aircraft!

Let me correct you and set the record staright. The massacre was started by the Bengali soldiers, and not by the West Pakistani soldiers, by killing there West Pakistani officers. Not only they killed them but also their familes including children. Most women were also raped. The Pakistani Govt did not disclose this in a fear of reprisal in West Pakistan, otherwise all East Pakistani's would have been butchered in West Pakistan. The action of the army was in revenge and revenge is always rough. It's very regretable that so many people were killed from both sides.

These pictures shows how and where Bangladesh and Pakistan can speak in same voice. We don't need formal introduction and other formalities a simple Salam and embrace can go long way.

I have seen member of another Pakistani forum even in touch with Saiful Azam. Goes to show reality of 1971 is recognized and reconciled in large extent in both countries.

Sir, I have heard so many fantasies from people like you but this one has to be the most unique. you surely have set the record straight! Most Bangladeshi cantonments were full of west pakistani troops. The only Bengali officer who too control before 26th March was Major General Moinul Hussein, who was a very liked and respected officer among the junior west Pakistani ranks. your theory is absurd at its best. I do not know why I am replying to you but you should state your source of knowledge before claiming such a preposterous idea.

If Yahya and Bhutto wanted revenge because "Bengalis raped west pakistani officers' wives"(which is one of the biggest lies I have ever heard in my life), why did they come to Dhaka to talk to Sheikh Mujib on parliament and post election govt?!! No professional army initiates something lke "Operation Searchlight" as a revenge on its own people. Pakistan Army was not unprofessional. It was planned by cool and calm heads. Who kills university professors? who kills students in university? who gang rapes muslim women inside mosque(There is concrete evidence of this in National Public Library and government papers in Dhaka)? How many raped women(east or west pakistani) have you met sir??
