Bangladesh woos investors with India-specific SEZs

Press Trust of India / Kolkata Feb 20, 2012, 13:47 IST

Armed with duty-free treaty with India, Bangladesh is aiming $1 billion export by this June and has also begun wooing Indian companies to invest in the neighbouring country with SEZs targeting only Indian companies.

"With duty-free export to India, we are expecting the Bangladeshi export should increase to $1 billion by June 2012 from $500 million last year," India Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry President AM Ahmad said here today on the sidelines BCIM Business Forum meet.

Ahmad who is also the chairman of Nitol-Niloy Group was also developing two 100 acres each industrial zones with SEZ status in the country - one for garment in Kishoregunj near Dhaka and another multi-product in Chattak, Sylhet.

State Bank of India in Bangladesh was also supporting the projects.

"We are targeting Indian garment manufacturers at places like Tirupur and Ludhiana for garment SEZ and we are receiving positive feedback," Ahmad said.

While the multi-product SEZ will try to attract Indian companies to invest with an aim to export to north-eastern states.

Ahmad said Bangladesh offers huge cheap manpower and duty-free export across the globe with Least Developed Country status being another major attraction for these SEZs.

Why are we allowing duty free export from Bangladesh when they are showing too much stubborn attitude for transit route.

India being the bigger partner is doing the right moves , over a long run it will be mutually beneficial .

Bangladesh giving us transit to reach NE states is a special gesture which will help us , "Stubbornness" is just sometimes political moves is needed to placate their domestic audience. especially with main oppn party being Anti India.

like wise we can afford to help them too which will be win win for both

Very good incentive for both the countries. We will definitely get access to the manpower and more importantly duty-free export across the globe. Additionally it will be much easier to send the good to the NE states.
Hope the good response from Indian companies will be a good confidence building measure for BD.

Maybe as a bargaining chip.

In the open rally, Khaleda Zia said that she will put all Indian goods on transit to North-East on fire. Strange politics in their country. Nice move the day Khaleda Zia will stop transit, we will stop duty free access to Bangladeshi goods and next year 2013 Sittwe-Paletwa river dredging will be completed and so will the roads connecting Paletwa to Indian border and to Aizawl. Too much arrogance by Bangladesh will cause them too much economic hardship.

Where are so called "Ghairatmand" Bangladeshis who always keep on blowing up so called Indian threat and want all treaties with India to be dissolved YET their govt is trying to earn money and improve their exports and economy courtesy same treaties with India.

Badalte rishtey :disagree:

BD and India can do their people so much good if they join hands. There's an awful lot of poverty in Bangladesh and also the nearby Indian states like WB and Odisha.

Bangladeshis particularly Jamati could not see that we are incurring loss by providing duty free access to their exports but still they want not to provide transit route to India.

Assuming that Khalida Zia is just like any other politician , will she bother about coming to power at Bangladesh or few billion loss in trade ?

Having said that i hope these kind of slogans and chest thumping are only for vote bank politics , once they come to power they are more rational than what they are while in opposition .

Thankfully the govt is not run by those kinds. If it were we would be looking at East Pakistan instead of Bangladesh.

Hey buddy, till now I haven't seen any BD guy in this forum supporting increased trade relations with India.

Duty free goods of only 41 category was agreed which include only 10 million piece of cloth just to minimize the trade deficit which is now some thing like 4 billion vs 500 million usd. So stop whining and when it comes to export of Bangladeshi goods to India, India always create artificial barrier. Within next 3 years Bangladesh is expecting to export more then 30 billion USD worth RMG product alone to all over the world. But in India it is almost nil due to all the artificial trade barrier created by India but in the mean time they are exporting freely. 10 million piece of cloth with duty free access is nothing but a peanuts compared to the amount of cloths that Bangladesh export to all over the world. Just go to walmart or any other store in USA or Canada you will see these are full of made in Bangladesh cloths. Indian domestic cloth market is around 18-25 billion USD though its quite small compared to the developed world as poor Indian just require to cover their body. But whatever barrier you create we will eat that market and will force closure of thousand so called Indian garments. If you dare then compete.

N in 200 acre of land how many company's you were dreaming??? It was a old news that a cement factory was supposed to be created in sylhet to export the products to NE India. Company's from all over the world are planning to come to Bangladesh because of its unique location and the advantage it has that is duty free access to middle east, japan, usa and euro zone. Its not a favor but taking the advantages of Bangladesh. Just see in the next couple of years if the electricity crisis is resolved how much investment comes to Bangladesh. Yes it is true that infra also needs to be undergone a rapid development.

@CaPtAiN_pLaNeT ...

Bondhu you Bangladeshi always nicely play your victimization card. We are giving you duty -free access means your goods are getting huge discount and our Indians goods are getting no such preference. I have also one question, you too have huge trade imbalance with Chinese, if they are too providing you duty free access to your goods, then its nice our fault!!! :undecided:

Anyway, there is a trade imbalance because whatever Bangladesh has to offer to India, we already produce them in India and you are importing them because you need them, not our fault. Only dominant thing you have to offer to India is the transit route(but we too have an option through Myanmar), so stop crying and Victimisation card.

We Indians mostly refrain from commenting on poverty of Bangladesh but you paranoid always bring poverty. Remember that India has three times more per capita income than Bangladesh plus you guys have 44% people still living below poverty line. So, keep buying and feeling proud of tauliya-chadar with tag of "Made in Bangladesh" in Canada.

If you Bangladesh really feeling too much arrogance over transit route then let me make it clear by this map. There are plans for 4 trade corridors with Myanmar with plans to connect it with Thailand and Vietnam and you know the fifth one though Ashuganj won't make much difference for us.
