As Taka experienced depreciation from last year's 80 per dollar to 84 per dollar now, defence budget rose by 12.9% in Taka but only 7.8% in dollar term from last year. Last year was 3.20 billion dollar, this year 3.45 billion dollar. An increase of mere $250 million. Worthless Taka has fucked up our defence budget in this year.:undecided:

Adopt Kuwaiti dinar, the best fucking currency in the world :D

It was expected to increase budget after the Myanmar's attitude last year. It was not surprised we are increasing budget accordingly to our GDP growth which is maintaining a average over 5 percent . Real question is how much of this will use for new capital acquisition and how much for maintaining current hardware we already have.

Dhaka, June 7 (UNB) – The government has proposed to allocate Tk 21,406 crore for the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry in the proposed budget for fiscal year 2018-19.

Besides, an allocation of Tk 3,334 crore is proposed for Security Service Division of the same Ministry.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said this while presenting the national budget for the new financial year at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

Of the total allocation of Public Security Division, Tk 20,148 crore will be spent for the operating purpose and the rest of Tk 1,258 crore for the development sector.

In the revised budget for fiscal year of 2017-18, an allocation of Tk 18,312 was kept for the operating purpose while Tk 1072 crore for the development purpose.

Of the total allocation of Security Service Division, Tk 2083 crore will be spent for the operating purpose and the rest of Tk 1251 crore for the development sector.

In the revised budget of the Security Service Division for fiscal year of 2017-18, an allocation of Tk 1925 was kept for the operating purpose while Tk 905 crore for the development purpose.

In his budget speech, Muhith said, “We have divided the previous Ministry of Home Affairs into two divisions namely 'Public Security Division' and 'Security Services Division' for maintaining normal law and order and peaceful environment.”

The capacity of the law enforcing agencies is being enhanced by providing necessary manpower, specialized equipment and vehicles, which will help increase their efficiency and professionalism, he said.

The services of the law enforcing agencies are being made pro-people through use of ICT. In this regard, initiatives such as ‘E-Traffic Prosecution & Fine Payment System’ and Service Friendly Traffic Management System’ are under way, the Finance Minister added.

Good to know. Guess it may have something to do with the issues with Myanmar.

This is a big increase.

Remember that inflation in Taka terms is at only 6% a year and so the increase in real terms is 6-7%. Defence budget as percentage of GDP is going up. This will continue into the future.

As for not such a large increase in dollar terms, please remember that arms imports are financed separate to defence budget.

@Aung Zaya

Thank you for turning BD into a military state. :partay:

No, it actually gone down as a percentage of GDP. Last year it was 1.28% of GDP now 1.20% of GDP. Total budget increased 16.0% from last year but defence budget just 12.9% in Taka.

Actually not much scope to encrease more that that, as our armed forces personnel number is not radically increased from the last year nor the maintainance cost increased abnormally. So this growth is normal.

Arms import are different from this budget. So whether we buy more or less, it will not effect in growth rate of defence budget.

You are correct.

My bad I did not take BD growth into account: 6(inflation) + 7.5(growth) is 13.5%
Yes, gdp increased by 13.5%. Look this data, it also saying that gdp increased by 13.5%

The GDP was calculated at Tk 25,378,490 million in the new budget. Though the budget for the current fiscal year calculated GDP to be Tk 22,236,000 million, it was later revised to Tk 22,384,980 million.

This defence budget growth rate is actually not bad, it is healthy steady growth.Even if we increase the defence budget to double in a single year, it does not mean our capability will be double within a year, it may give the soldier double salary but his performance will not be double. So what we need is this type of steady and healthy growth in defence budget and massively increase arms import and domestic manufacturing whose cost should come independently from defence budget. This year's defence budget showing less growth in dollar term because of it's appreciation against Taka. But what actually matter, growth in Taka, is quite good at 12.9%

Defence budget covers salaries, operational costs and infrastructure. There is also a small element that I believe is used for domestic arms production and hopefully this will see big rises in the future.

Yes, not one of them can be radically increased within a year, so there is no scope to increase budget radically. I expect the defence budget to increase 20% every year. So, real growth would be around 14%-15% or double of GDP growth. In that cases, we will see defence spending to reach 2% of GDP within few years.Which should be our target.
