Bangladesh touches new high in power generation

Bangladesh has reached a new milestone in power generation, touching the 9000 MW threshold, Power Development Board (PDB) has said.

PDB Director (PR) Saiful Hassan Chowdhury said the feat was achieved on Thursday when the country produced 9035 MW electricity, the highest figures so far.

Under the Awami League government, power generation has been more than doubled in the last seven years, the state-run utility says.

Only last Saturday, 8942 MW was generated – the second best record.

In 2008, the country recorded its best production figures of a little over 4000 MW.

In his budget speech, Finance Minister AMA Muhith had said that under the Awami League the production capacity has gone up to 14000 MW.

The power output target set by the government will be attained by 2021, he added.

Muhith had also said that the country was 16000 MW short of reaching the 2021 goal.

As many as 29 new power stations are in the pipeline, 20 are in the process of getting clearance, and eight others are being built.

Referring to 600 MW electricity being imported from India, the minister added that a total of 6500 MW power would be imported from the region.

Major urban center use disproportionate amount of power in developing world.6200 MW for a city of 2 crore is not that unusual.Delhi suburbs are a major center of Indian auto industry,so it is understandable why they need that much.

too low for a country , but congrats at least they have added to the gen capacity. Pakistan produces now a days 17000 matts and has a short fall of about 4000 watts which is to be met by 2017-2018.

There is no auto industry in Delhi,infact there are hardly any manufacturing industries in Delhi,auto industries are in Pune,Gujarat and Chennai

Adding an additional 16,000 mw in just five years is rather impossible. It means new power plants with a combined output capacity of 5000mw shall have to be built every year. Is it that easy? BD govt planners should project and set realistic and achievable targets, not wishful ones.

That is New Delhi,an administrative area.
Delhi is a union territory of size 1,484 km².

I think they will be maybe take 2 more years for this 16,000mw target.

Both the Roopur nuclear(2.4GW) and Matarbari(1.2GW) coal power plants are scheduled for completion by 2023.

It is always a good idea to set targets and then at least you have a goal to aim for.
