Bangladesh to export bandwidth to India, Bhutan

Bangladesh is going export unused bandwidth to eight states of India and Bhutan. A team of Bangladesh led by state minister for posts and telecommunications Tarana Halim would fly to India and Bhutan by the end of this week to negotiate terms of the decision, reports BSS.

Indian state of Tripura has been importing 10 gbps bandwidth from Bangladesh since March, but the volume is small against their demand. Monwar Hossain, managing director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) said Tarana has schedule to meet with Indian central Telecommunication and IT minister, Tripura's chief minister and officials of Indian state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BNSL).

"Actually, we would tell them (India) that if you want bandwidth for other states then we would reserve it . . . at the last call minute, it is hard to manage for us," he said. Referring to the agreement with BSNL for bandwidth supply to Tripura, the BSCCL managing director said: "we've incorporated an option to expand the volume up to 40 gbps as per their requirement."

Other eastern states - Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagachal, Mizoram etc also requires bandwidth, he added.

Besides, Bhutan would also be a potential market for our bandwidth, said Hossain.

Earlier on March 23, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi launched bandwidth export to Tripura through Akhaura-Agartala frontier through video conference.

During Indian Prime Minister Norendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh, the state-owned BSCCL struck a deal with Indian state-owned BSNL for exporting bandwidth.

According to the agreement, BSNL is now receiving 10 gbps bandwidth for Tripura in return for annual payment of Tk 96 million. - IH

BD to start exporting bandwidth to Bhutan soon
Bangladesh would start exporting the excess bandwidth to Bhutan within a month.

State-owned Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) has been assigned the task of exporting bandwidth.

BSCCL would establish the linkage with the Eastern Himalayan country using network of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) through Akhaura-Tripura frontier, said officials.

Monwar Hossain, managing director of BSCCL, Tuesday said initially Bhutan is taking 2.5 gbps bandwidth, says BSS.

"... actually, we are ready to put pen on agreement paper," he added.

The South Asian country has taken steps to establish a third international link to the internet.

It currently has only two links to the internet, one through Gelephu and the other through Phuentsholing.

But, both converge in the Indian city of Siliguri, which means Bhutan lacks back up connectivity to the internet.

Replying to a query on pricing, Monwar said: "For 2.5 gbps, we would charge $ 15 for per megabit (MB) of bandwidth while $ 9 if they (Bhutan) take 10 gbps."

About the linkage with Bhutan, he said the bandwidth would go through PGCIL network that has already been connected with Bhutan.

Bangladesh has started exporting 10 gbps bandwidth to India in March last year.

Bhutan has started the discussion in August and an expert team visited Bangladesh to check out the landing station of BSCCL's lone submarine cable, South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 or SEA-ME-WE 4 in the last week of September, 2016.

Bangladesh has now over 200 gbps bandwidth and after meeting domestic demand it has the capacity to export 50 gbps bandwidth.

Can someone explain what happens when demand of bandwidth rises in BD? We should help ourselves before helping the misers in India. Bhutan is different, though!!!
Are you giving it for free?

Post reported. @waz @Zaki @Manticore please check the post. Unnecessary flaim baiting, diversing from thread, off topic.

Then we stop selling them Bandwidth. As simple as that. What's wrong in selling unused bandwidth for some bucks? Although selling bandwidth doesn't get you much money, but still something is better than nothing

To be honest, Indian seven sisters are riding easy on the backs of humongous Bangladeshi investment in this sector worth a lot more than what Indian states are paying for bandwidth. Tk. 96 million is chump change......let India take an extra SEMEWE submarine cable drop in Kolkata AND provide the trunking network all the way back to Nagaland, see how much it costs then. :-)

What we SHOULD have done is REQUIRE Indian back-office businesses set up shop in Bangladesh (not only call centers but remote software support for IT infrastructure) as a return for providing this bandwidth, to eat up some of the rest of the bandwidth and provide REQUIRED number of stipulated jobs to our youth. To date, no large Indian major IT firm has set up shop in Bangladesh. Selling bandwidth is silly, it hardly recoups the investment.

I never get amazed at how much we can sell ourselves short for........

As usual the govt. nincompoops effed it all up without using the leverage. BRAVO Mrs. Hasina!

I guess we can still revise the contract going forward, given the stipulated language in the contract provides for re-negotiations when it renews, unless these Bangladesh govt. morons signed a five year contract with no escape clause.

I swear we should be choosing better educated BCS cadres - choosing the likes of the existing BCS idiots results in losses worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the state coffers........I'm sorry - but I have no confidence in these inept govt. servants at the Telecom ministry and the functionaries.

OTOH the govt. should be giving unlimited tax breaks to offshoring IT businesses in light of the H1B situation in the US, UK will follow through in this soon as well. That will eat up the bandwidth and provide jobs too.

It is not inflaming. BD should take care of its own interest first and India can help itself by an taking alternative measure.

Exactly !

Nope. Chump change is all you can hope for and all you will get.

Its market economics...if you want more, negotiate better.

To be precise I don't know how much should we demand for 10 gbps annually. But above all the bandwidth is unused. So, if we keep it to us and not use it then it's a complete waste of capacity. 96 million that too in taka is pretty much nothing. But keep it unused in Bangladesh you get 0 taka. 96 million is better than 0 taka. At least the money will cover some of BSCCL's employee's salary.

We should see how much Bhutan pays for bandwidth then decide whether to ask more money from India or not to renew the contract. If Bhutan pays higher we should look to sell more to them. Or if we need more bandwidth, then reach some sort of agreement with the involving parties to terminate the deal. It's not something to get much worked up on.

Well the guys that agreed on the deal knows better than you and me. Indian companies do invest in Bangladesh. I believe someday you will see one or two Indian IT farms running shops in Bangladesh.

OTOH the govt. should be giving unlimited tax breaks to offshoring IT businesses in light of the H1B situation in the US, UK will follow through in this soon as well. That will eat up the bandwidth and provide jobs too.
Aye. We should encourage companies to invest in Bangladesh. Although there are already some Offshoring IT businesses operating in Bangladesh. A cousin of mine works at Therap. And said they are investing heavily in Bangladesh
https://www.therapservices.net/inte...ip-chittagong-implementing-therap-bangladesh/

There are other offshoring IT farms investing too. The problem is half of our population don't know how to handle a PC. If we can arrange proper computer training for people then things will improve. IT can be an important sector of Bangladesh economy.

This article shows Bangladesh is the 22nd best destination for IT outsourcing in 2016. Improving 4 places from 26 in 2015.

As you can see we do have financial attractiveness but lack the skills and business environment. I would say that 22nd isn't good enough for us but then again with half of you population unable to handle a PC, how much better can you expect?

Watch your word in reported post, not worthy of having further discussion.

thanks bd, we will return the "favour" by selling more stuff to you... :)

. .
What kind of return India can give to BD? Oh!! you will give us Teesta water, isn't it?
I dont like to sell teesta water.. I was talking about products we sell to bd to do them 'favour'.... :)
more cotton, rice, bikes plz.

This is why we're selling bandwidth -

Bangladesh has now over 200 gbps bandwidth and after meeting domestic demand it has the capacity to export 50 gbps bandwidth.

BD to get 2nd submarine cable connection Feb 21

Bangladesh is going to connect with the second submarine cable on February 21 to get another 1500 gbps bandwidth, as the SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium is set to launch its global operation on this day, reports BSS.

The South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5), a consortium of 15 leading telecom operators from 17 countries, would announce its operation at a ceremony in Turkish city of Istanbul, said officials.

"The second undersea cable would be the real redundancy that might allow Bangladesh to stay online always and start full-fledged international bandwidth trade," he added.

Mentioning that Bangladesh has now nearly 300 gbps bandwidth from its lone submarine cable, Monwar said: "We are going to get another 1500 gbps bandwidth from the second undersea cable."
