DHAKA: Bangladesh police have arrested a businessman after he allegedly edited together a photograph of the country’s female prime minister with that of a half-naked woman on his Facebook page.

Police following up a tip-off visited Shariful Islam’s home at Maizdi, 150 kilometres south of Dhaka, and found the doctored pictures of the premier on his computer, local police chief Chowdhury Abul Kalam said.

“We asked him to open his Facebook page. On the page, the face of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was pasted with that of a half-naked woman,” he told AFP on Thursday.

Islam, an owner of an advertising firm, also “doctored the pictures of the home minister and some other ministers”, Kalam said, adding that the accused faced up to 10 years in jail if found guilty on defamation charges.

Bangladesh authorities have launched a series of prosecutions this year over material on Facebook pages aimed at Hasina.

Last month a student was charged with sedition after he posted comments on Facebook linking Hasina with the disappearance of an opposition leader.

In January police detained Al Nayeem Jubaer, 19, for posting obscene remarks about Hasina’s father, the nation’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on the social networking site.

Also that month a 29-year-old Bangladeshi man was sentenced in absentia to six months in jail after posting a Facebook message that appeared to wish for the prime minister to die in a car accident.

Ruhul Khandaker, who has been studying in Australia since 2009, will also be prosecuted for sedition and the courts have sought to have him extradited.

Lol Bangladesh is North Korea 2.0 (Replace Kim Jong with Hasina)..wasn't there a thread few months about a guy who posted something about PM on facebook and was arrested? My question is: How Bangladeshi authorities can easily track these people ?I mean we have thousands of funny pictures of Musharraf or Benazir or Zardari on the net and on this site too now if GOP wanted to trace people who created these pictures it wouldn't be easy.

Dhaka, Feb 28 (bdnews24.com) – Parliament on Tuesday passed the Pornography Control Bill-2011 into law with the provision of up to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and Tk 500,000 in fine for its violation.

The law bans production, preservation, transportation and marketing of any kind of pornographic material.

Home minister Shahara Khatun on Jan 29 placed the bill, aimed at curbing degradation of moral and social values, proposing harsh punishment for the offenders. The bill was passed after deputy speaker Shawkat Ali put it to voice vote.

If a person produces pornography using a child, and prints, distributes and publishes such a material, or sells, supplies or exhibits child pornography, s/he will be punished, with maximum 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and fine up to Tk 500,000.

The law provides for seven years' rigorous imprisonment and Tk 200,000 in fine for producing any pornography or forcing or luring any man, woman or child into joining pornography and taking their still pictures, video or film with or without their knowledge.

As per the bill, such crimes will be tried under Criminal Procedure Code and the offenders could be tried in a special court or tribunal, prime minister's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad had said on Jan 2.

Earlier, the cabinet approved the "Pornography Control Act-2011" on Jan 2. On placing of the bill in parliament, it was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on the home ministry to report back within three weeks after scrutiny.

DEFINITION

According to the law, pornography means any vulgar dialogue, acting, body gesture, nude or half-nude dance which creates sexual urge and that could be contained in film, video, audiovisual film, still picture, graphics or in any other means that has no artistic or educational value.

The definition of pornography also covers sex stimulating obscene books, periodicals, sculptures, imaginary structures, cartoons or leaflets. The law will not be applicable to books, writings, drawings or pictures reserved or used for religious purposes.

According to the law, a police sub-inspector or officer of same status will investigate any offence falling under the law and complete his investigation within 30 working days.

If the investigation cannot be completed within this time on valid grounds, additional 15 working days will be extended with the permission of the superintendent of police or officer of the same status and on approval from the court.

According to the law, if a person tries to blackmail anyone or damages anyone's social or individual reputation through pornography, the offender will be sentenced to maximum five years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 200,000.

Your article says production, preservation, transportation and marketing of pornographic material is illegal.

The man simply modified a picture of a half-naked woman on his FB page. It was a stupid thing to do on his part though.
