It is quite difficult to assume to be honest if Gangaridai was an independent sovereign or not.But from the extracts of Diodorus, Curtius or Plutarch, it is clear that they were quite convinced that Gangaridai was indeed a sovereign nation apart from Prasii or Praisoi (Prachi). The nation was armed with such a massive number of foot soldiers, horses or elephants that it is little difficult to assume them not to be independent and as tributary of the Nandas. Most possibly they enjoyed full scale sovereignty with a very active and prosperous port like Tamralipta on the mouth of Ganges.
