Bangladesh Cuisine & Restaurants

Good photos, and the sushi looks delectable!

The variety of cuisine, and I'm not talking about run-of-the-mill restaurants in every major neighbourhood in urban India, but Michelin star-rated restaurants in Delhi and Bombay, cannot be surpassed by any other south Asian city.

I urge you to get a table at the REAL 'Wasabi' by Morimoto, both in Bombay and Delhi. :)

I'm sure as the living standard increases (with disposable income) - hip eateries at all price points will keep mushrooming all over South Asia.

Thirty some years back in Dhaka, you either had high falutin' expensive joints (usually in five star hotels) or burger/chop/kabab places aimed at the middle-class general populace (usual hang-outs for students).

Nowadays the culinary variety is unbelievably diverse because of a large number of Dhaka-dwellers' weekly culinary jaunts to places like Bangkok, Singapore and Hong-Kong, not to mention KL and Delhi/Mumbai. The taste of those places are being created at home where a certain section of people are willing to pay well (say Rs. 5000 per person on average) for a well-cooked and nicely presented meal in a place with nice ambiance.

Of course this says nothing about the myriad coffee joints, student hangouts, family restaurants etc.

Can you even get liquor with your food? There is no pleasure without a nice whiskey with your meal.

Foreigners can get whiskey of course but let your wealthy host pay for it. With Corkage charges you're looking at two or three times what good whiskey would cost in Indian cities. Of course - I'm no whiskey connoisseur but that's what I hear.

I think drinking whiskey paired with food is not considered fashionable in Western circles but don't know what goes on in India. Wine, Mixed drinks or cocktails (e.g. Margaritas, Martinis) are usually had with food that I know of.

Dhaka's food is too oily, it doesn't suit me. I can only have food at the Uttara club and homemade food.

Like all other cities Dhaka has its fair share of rooftop restaurants that could use more innovative decor planning...but the food on offer more than makes up for it.

Decor to paisey ka mamla - more money with a better interior designer then better decor. Dhaka has quite a few interior design houses but they are expensive...what you see above is (no boast) just Dal Barabar (too plain Jane). There are trendier places too - every year a few new ones come up and gets patronized heavily.

Restaurant business is so fickle - patrons with money sometimes don't even go to the same place twice.

Speaking of 'khasi kosha mangsho' - Dhaka has everyone beat in this dish. Just had some for dinner as a matter of fact (Kosha Korbani Goat Bhuna with Rumali roti - Yum!).
