New Delhi, Nov 29 (bdnews24.com) – Chief of Army Staff General Mohammed Abdul Mubeen has said that China is just helping Bangladesh in infrastructure development and that Dhaka's ties with Beijing will not affect friendly relation between Bangladesh and India.

He said on Tuesday that Bangladesh and China did not have a strategic relation and the relation between the two had nothing to do with Dhaka's ties with New Delhi.

The Chief of Army Staff was talking to media persons after reviewing the Passing out Parade of India's premier National Defence Academy near Pune in the country's western state of Maharashtra.

Gen Mubeen is currently on a five-day tour to India on an invitation from the chief of the Indian Army Gen V K Singh.

He was the third foreigner to take the salute of the newly passed out cadets of the prestigious institution after late Chinese premier Chou En-Lai and former chief of the then Royal Nepal Army Gen P J Thapa.

During the visit, Gen Mubeen is scheduled to interact with Indian defence minister A K Antony, national security advisor Shiv Shankar Menon and top officials of the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defence.

He will also visit Paratroopers' Training School at Agra in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He is also likely to visit Indian Army's Eastern Command at Fort Williams in Kolkata.

An official statement from the Indian government's Ministry of Defence said that Gen Mubeen would visit important field formations of the Indian Army. "The high-level visits of both Army chiefs in 2008, 2010 and 2011 boosted our military-to-military relations," it read.

A spokesman of the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi said that military-to-military cooperation between Bangladesh and Indian armed forces encompassed exchange of high and medium level visits, availing of training courses in each other's training institutions, witnessing of designated exercises by military observers from both sides, exchange of war veterans, United Nations Peacekeeping Operation, sharing experience in disaster management, sports and adventure activities.

Gen Mubeen's visit to India is a reciprocation of a similar tour by the chief of the Indian Army last June.

He expressed hope that the visits by top military officials to each other's country would foster closer relations between the two neighbours and act as a catalytic tool for the mutual benefit of both.

Altogether 302 cadets, including 16 from Bhutan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the Maldives, graduated from the National Defence Academy of India on Tuesday. They had commenced their training on June 30, 2008.

Gen Mubeen, as the reviewing officer of the Passing out Parade, presented medals to the award winners of the autumn term of this year.

Chou En-Lai was the chief guest for the NDA's passing out parade in December 1956, and Gen P J Thapa was the chief guest in Nov 2004.

The Indian Government said that the visit would further cement India's defence relationship with Bangladesh and add impetus to ongoing defence cooperation.

"Maintenance of enhanced military-to-military contacts with Bangladesh by Indian Army is mutually beneficial to the strategic interests of both the neighbours," said the statement.

It seems General Mubeen has learned a few lessons of diplomacy, too. He knows where to talk what. He was skillful in negotiating the purchase of ultramodern Chinese weapons. Now, he is talikng like a diplomat in Delhi.

The Bangladesh Army chief, General Mohammed Abdul Mubeen, said that despite China helping his country modernise Chittagong port, there was no strategic shift in Bangladesh’s relationship with China.

Speaking to media persons after reviewing the passing out parade of the 121st course of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla on Tuesday, he said the collaboration with China on infrastructure building would not jeopardise Bangladesh’s friendly relationship with India.

Stressing the fact that the Bangla-China collaboration would not in any way hamper Indo-Bangla relationship, the Mubeen said, “The collaboration with China is purely to satisfy the infrastructure needs of our country.’’Mubeen broke ice with the Pune media by simply saying, “My name is Mubeen and I command the Bangladesh Army.’’ According to the General, the Indo-Bangla relationship was at its best in present times.

A second generation army officer whose father, Major Baseth, served in the Bangladesh Army, Mubeen said, “The last few years have seen the relationship between India and Bangladesh strengthen. There is more interaction between the two nations now than ever before.’’

On the first-ever joint military exercise undertaken by the two countries in October 2011 — which saw commando units from both countries engage in a 14-day counter-insurgency exercise in the jungles of Bangladesh — Mubeen said, “Unless we sit down and discuss matters, there can be no understanding between countries. This joint military exercise was plannedin 2007 and executed in 2011. It was a big success and helped us sharpen our skills to fight militants.’’

Despite improvement of ties between the two countries, Mubeen did not expect young men from Bangladesh being sent to the NDA for training in the near future. The General said, “The Bangladesh government has limited funds and the basic military training course in our country comprises a 2-year programme, followed by one year of military training. This is different from the NDA pattern. However, things could change in the future.’’

About terror groups operating in Bangladesh and fomenting trouble in India, Mubeen said the Bangladesh police, headed by former Bangladesh Army officers, had successfully cracked down on home-grown terrorists in Bangladesh. “The Bangladesh government does not allow the growth of terror in the country. Our two countries have also been working together to tackle this problem,’’ he said.

1) There is no BD trainee in the NDA although there are from many other countries.

2) Gen. Mubeen says no 'Strategic Alliance' between BD and China.

3) Gen. Mubeen also says there is a little chance of sending any trainees from Bangladesh to the NDA in the near future.

Gen. Mubeen knows how to speak in a diplomatic way, may be at par with the Indian bureaucrats.

Seeing from how our current leaders deal with diplomatic stuff, do we risk falling under a junta?

I might sound like a crazy lunatic but i feel a military govt would be better than this BNP and AL crisis. You could say i never experienced military rule so i dont know what its like but right now it seems like anything other than this AL and BNP b/s will be a blessing.

I don't think a military government would go well for those Western boys.

Bangladesh simply needs to change the system. Oh wait, there is no system! :cheesy:
