Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport construction to begin in 2018

The better jobs and opportunities are all in Dhaka so it naturally attracts everyone in Bangladesh to come study and work.

Govt. has plans to move industries and govt. offices out to suburban exurban areas of Dhaka but it will take time.

The entire city of Dhaka is on Google maps. You can take a look. There are outlying suburbs. It is dense but things will get better with time.

Did you ever visit?

I have alot of Bangladeshi friends in Malaysia. Most of them from Dhaka , Tangail and Rajshahi. They usually complain alot about Dhaka being over congested and not having enough infrastructure to hold its population.

I do plan to visit in near future though.

.
Look at this old article. They tried to choose Char areas in 2011 and it went nowhere.

www.thedailystar.net › news-detail-209285

The point is that - the low lying areas south of Dhaka aren't stable or will be hard to protect from sea level rise.

Link not working. I agree about what you said about char areas, may be that's why the cost is so high.

My two cents on this is that Chars (riverine islands) maybe cheaper and easier places but they don't make great structural places to build things on. Chars are brand new land which are hardly stable.

Whereas the land in the Barind areas (Varendra areas) near the National parks north of Gazipur and near the BIPSOT training grounds is far more suitable because of stability and firm substrate (the best we have in our little homeland).

Look at how Kansai airport had land subsidence and sinking problems which became a problem even decades after being built.

They were able to arrest the sinking which was very costly. We are not Japan and we don't have billions to spare like they do unless absolutely needed...

Also - look at how they are adding another island - you have to give some props to these people. It takes balls to landfill the sea at Osaka bay (60 feet deep) and then build something like this...

Yes IMHO Kansai can be the model for Dhaka's new airport. We need space for expansion in another twenty years after it is built...

Well Bangladesh cannot become Malaysia overnight but it can't remain where it is for long. People are too well exposed to KL and Bangkok nowadays. :-)

Dude what is so special about 50-100 feet elevation? I think only 4m is enough as required to Kansai airport, artificially built in the sea but for safety elevated to 14m level. The proposed sites above fluctuates around 8-16m above sea and more can be done for construction. And if this airport is built in this area, will serve better to Dhaka/Narayanganj people and Sylhet/Chittagong/Comilla people will freely move avoiding Dhaka traffic, plus advantage of Southern BD people. I think this way more people will be benefited than that of Uttara. And about viahara, more vihar sites were found in Munshiganj areas and frequented by ancient rulers, and none if you compare with Mymensingh. And Rajshahi we are not comparing but if Comilla could offer could be something.

Comilla Mainamati near the Cantt. could be great as you say as that area is not too well populated. Placing airports too close to water has issues - you have to build marine walls to stop ingress of water during river tsunamis or hurricanes. Kansai spent $1 billion in raising the airport. It is not cheap.

Don't shoot me because I have an opinion. :)

We have to rise above regionalism because practically speaking the DAC-CTG land and rail corridor is where EPZ's will have the greatest logistical success because of ease of freight shipping. The airport can be in the middle of it. Or about within 40 Miles radius of Dhaka in any other direction.

Our DAC-CTG Corridor is equal to China's EPZ's strung across it's west coast.

This is a totally useless project which may ruin our economy. But what has motivated SHW to go for this. I enumerate some below:

a. Her project of changing ZIA into BIA was opposed by all - officials and the people. So she looked for constructing another airport to give it that name.
b. Eventually she or Joy will like to abandon Dhaka and build a capital around where Sk Mujib is buried. The new site of BIA will be conveniently located.
c. Her lust for making money drives her to undertake projects that are totally unnecessary.

Is it a bad idea to move a significant portion of the administration out of Dhaka? Making Dhaka the financial Capital and Gopalganj the admin capital? They'll just come to dhaka for parliament!

.
Good...

We don't have any ICBM named after Bangabandhu, should build one...

Maybe Awami laeague can request it master india to name one of their ICBM after "Bangabandhu" and then indians will point that to Bangabandhuland. Thats the irony we live in.

I dont think so these kinds of big projects can be implemented in Comilla and Dhaka because of population density and infrastructures already built there. And I put forward my points why not Trisal. Because of long distance from capital and other significant areas of the country and traffic hassles to cross populated areas. For example it takes 4 hours to only leave Dhaka after you land in Uttara and your journey is to Chittagong or Khulna, so Trisal will add 4 hours more to that. But in the proposed areas along Padma bank its much easier to avoid Dhaka. If you want to go to Dhaka south and N. Ganj take the Mawa route. Similarly through this route its easier to go to Comilla-Chittagong-Sylhet and South BD. And if you link Aricha road with this, People of North BD and Dhaka North will have easy access. Also link up the Airport railway plan to N'ganj you link it to whole BD. And there isnt much room around densely populated areas around Dhaka but Manikganj, Madaripur and some south parts Dhaka-Munshiganj along the Padma bank has room for much development. So future expansion plans should be in these areas. I see these are pragmatic approach as lies in center of BD and very close to Dhaka as you said 40 miles. And land of these areas are mix of 3 major lands of BD. From north Varendra, from South Vanga and from East Comilla. Not necessarily wetlands.

PS the less populated lands north of Dhaka in the map is designated for Madhupur forest.

It is a bad idea but it won't ruin the BD economy as that is too large now for a Tk50,000Cr to significantly affect.

Thisp airort is not needed for another decade and the money should instead be spent on more urgent railways and bridges.

.
Ideally our premier airport should be planned around Chandroghona on south bank of R Karnafully. This to take care of the projected deep sea port as well as the economic boom this area will experience with the opening of the trans-Asia road and rail links. The resultant economic activity will help in mitigating some of the issues the tribesmen have. And the hills could be used as aircraft igloos and ammo depots by the air force.

Very nice - you put the cherry right on top of the icing and cake. :-)

Brilliant! :enjoy:

এতো বুদ্ধি নিয়া রাত্রে ঘুমান কেমনে?

Regardless we should see how Nippon Koei chooses feasibility of the site...

Even purely topologically speaking, airport in the bay and airport in the char in a flood prone country are completely different. Let alone any financial or infrastructure justification.. This is another of awami looting scheme in the name of sheikh mujib. Apple does fall far from the tree.

The site at Munshiganj was great, but BNP goons created a mess out of it.

.
i am all for infrastructure projects.... but given that dhaka airport is not fully utilised i am unclear the need for a new airport..... as to becoming a hub....i am unclear how this is to be achieved...

proper projection of future demand should determine this project.... dhaka already has two airport.... where is this going to be?

Dhaka airport is in Uttara which used to be a sparsely populated part outside of Dhaka during the 80's.
Now Uttara is like every other street in Dhaka... One cannot have an airport in the midddle of a crowded area. Plus even if you can expand the airport, the infastructure surrounding the airport (roads) have no room for expansion...

So we need to move the airport away from dhaka

Arial Beel airport proposal had an evil intention. When the Hindu land owners left the country many of the land sellings were not properly documented. Some were taken by force. BAL wanted to buy the lands there, but the present occupiers were not ready to sell because this would not bring them compensations. BAL hooligans would therefore have been received money for the sales. This is one reason that BNP united with the locals to deny BAL hooligans any benefits.

Sounds more like enemy property. Even if they bought them they bought them for throw away price. I dont mind use those land for better purposes for free.
