AWACS Developed by DRDO to Roll Out in January 2011; Flight Tests in 2011

Agency reports out of Bangalore have quoted Mr. Prahlada, R&D Chief of DRDO, confirming that indigenous Airborne Warning and Control Systems developed by DRDO will begin to roll out in January 2011. The DRDO is working on integrating these AWACS onboard the Brazilian aircraft EMB-145 as per Indian Air Force's requirement

Flight tests are expected in India later in 2011. Prahlada termed the indigenous AWACS as "very cost-effective" and "probably the cheapest in the world".

Officials said the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) was being developed by the Bangalore-based Center for Airborne Systems (CABS), a lab under the DRDO for the IAF. Under a deal signed between India and Brazil in 2008, Embraer aircraft manufacturer was entrusted to modify its EMB145 to carry Active Array Antenna Unit by India on the aircraft's fuselage.

Three modified EMB-145 aircraft would be developed under the agreement. The indigenous AWACS would detect, identify and classify threats present in the surveillance area and act as a command and control center to support air operations.

Great news... any information available regarding its radar capabilities apart from being AESA??

The system will have Electronic Support Measures, Communications Support Measures ability. Datalinks to network the AEW & C with fighters, and ground based control systems will also be provided, as will be a Satellite Communication System. The aircraft will also have a comprehensive self defence suite. The entire avionics suite will be linked via a datahandling system, controlled by Mission computers.

The Radar will have an extended range mode against fighter aircraft, and will consist of two back to back AESA arrays, with an additional dedicated IFF array.

The ESM system will be able to track sources with a directional accuracy of 2 deg. RMS and a frequency accuracy of 1 MHz.
The ESM system will have complete 360 degree coverage in azimuth and have a database of up to 3000 emitters against which threats will be scanned.

Communication Support Measure system will analyse and record intercepted communications both inflight and post flight.

Self Protection Suite will have a passive Missile Approach Warning System, a Radar Warning Receiver and countermeasures dispensers.

The SPS will be integrated with the ESM & CSM suite.

The aircraft will have Inflight refuelling.

The aircraft will have SATCOM, and datalinks to pass on ESM, CSM and radar data to ground stations and datalinks to pass on target information to fighters. More than 40 other aircraft will be datalinked together by the AEW & C aircraft

Thanks sir jee :)... i did go through Wiki.. actually i was looking for more minute details like range of the Radars detection... can it work on all 3 bands lik S,X and L which will be very nice if it is able to work.. and finally how different it is from our Phalcon....

But whats the need when we have

VAJRA, an X Band Passive Phased Array Radar

RAJENDRA, a C-Band Battery Level Passive Phased Array Radar for AKASH Weapon system of IGMDP

There is also a Long Range Tracking Radar (LRTR), an L-Band Fully distributed Active Aperture Phased Array Radar going on for AD Program

As as far as the S band, DRDO is working on Digital Beam Forming for in the S-Band Rotating Electronically Scanned Array Radar (RESAR).Which would Enhance the capability of Phased Array Radars

Thank you sirjee.. i know we have these RADARS... but was thinking like a smart phone.. all in one device :P.... so my final question is on which band are they developing this platform??... will this be linked with Phalcon??.. i mean inter communication is possible??.. i guess i am questioning more :woot:

I am not sure , but read this article..it says 'S' band.

..:: India Strategic ::.. Military Aviation: AWACS: Watchdogs of the Skies

about interlinking with phalcons, I gues thats whats the purpose of it..interlink all our awacs and aircrafts...read the point 'j','k' and 'o' on page six from the images I posted above.it should clear the doubts about it.

BTW it has also air to air refuelling capability.
