Since the 80s, I have personally favored designs similar to the current S-97 on noise, safety, landing footprint, and reliability considerations. Performance is high enough beyond conventional helicopters and range and payload can be maximized by sizing it correctly.

The Mil V-12 below was not a good idea though:
