The purpose of an exercise is to exploit any weakness of the military equipment, tactics, personnel, software etc. etc. And post-exercise briefing pin pointing the weakness and mistakes will be held to make sure improvements are make to eradicate such weakness and mistakes.

All types of possible scenario would be planned and incorporated in continuous series of exercise to uncover strength and weakness. Example, a tank convoy with air defence support, or a tank convey with-out air support, or encounter an enemy with air support, or encountering an enemy with-out air support.

Past few years, we have seen in annual exercises held in Churihe, in which Red forces (PLA) vs Blue forces (enemy force), and 9 out of 10 it was always the Red forces loosed out to Blue forces. PLA Red forces are always placed under unfavourable positions (no air support, no radar etc.) vs Blue forces who have everything from satellites, air supports, AWAC. The aim is very clear, fight against a superior enemy who has every thing, using whatever little you may have.

This article clearly stated tanks all over the world are helpless against air attacks, whether it is from helicopters or strike aircrafts. However, in its final sentences, it also stated that :

To be honest when it comes to Japan, unlike the other countries you mentioned, Japan is still more advanced even today than China overall. Japan is a country you should NEVER EVER underestimate, theybare world leaders in many tech fields which is not surprising considering the fact that Japan was the first industrial power in Asia, and the first Asian country to be developed and be as rich as the west.

Many Asian countries like S.korea,Singapore,Tawan etc thereafter just learned and followed Japan's lead even China also learned from Japan's experience. So make no mistake Japan is still very much among the world's top most advanced industrial powers and their navy is also world class.

As said, just because you might despise a country, that doesnt means you should also cover your eyes to their acheivements(many of which China still has to catch up to).
