Pensioners donate fund for martyrs

In a noble and humane gesture, elder citizens from among the pensioners donated fund for military and paramilitary martyrs to Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh.

Led by Secretary General of "Bharat Pensioners Samaj", Shri S.C. Maheshwari, the senior, superannuated citizens met Dr Jitendra Singh here yesterday and handed over to him a cheque of the amount collected by them through donations by different pensioners. They said, they were contributing this amount to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the specific purpose of welfare and care of the families of the martyrs from the military and paramilitary forces, who were sacrificing their lives in anti-terrorist operations.

The letter accompanying the cheque stated that “Bharat Pensioners Samaj”, a conglomerate of 725 pensioners associations, reiterates its resolve to stand solidly behind the government and urges that those who insult our men in uniform or hamper the army operations against terrorists, should be dealt with an iron hand.

Appreciating the gesture, Dr Jitendra Singh said, regardless of the amount donated by the senior citizens, the matter of fact is that the value of the amount is many times more than it appears to be, for the simple reason that it has been collected with a sense of impeccable patriotism and it has been contributed from the most hard-earned pension drawn by some of our senior citizens.

Dr Jitendra Singh said, we are proud of the Indian Army which is among the best forces in the world and we are also eternally indebted to the supreme sacrifices made by our army personnel. The sacrifices of a soldier, he said, cannot be compensated by any amount of money, but yet, a gesture like this is only meant to reaffirm our commitment to the motherland and to those bravehearts who laid down their lives so that we could live.

a General Engineering Reserve Force (GREF) labourer was killed, while two others, including a BSF jawan, were injured today as Pakistan violated ceasefire by shelling mortars and firing on forward posts along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

An employee of General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF), one of the five people who was injured in Pakistani shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Thursday, succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning, an official said.

Sub-divisional police officer Mendhar Riaz Tantray told the Hindustan Times Parvaiz Ahmed, who was working as a labourer with GREF, was injured in Thursday’s firing at Balnoi. Ahmed, a resident of Dara Dulian in Poonch, died at the Army Hospital in Rajouri at 5am, said Riaz.

The latest ceasefire violation on Thursday came after a lull of two weeks.

GREF is part of the Border Roads Organisation, a division of the ministry of defence responsible for the upkeep of road network along India’s frontiers.

Four civilians have been killed in Pakistani shelling in Nowshera and Krishna Ghati sectors of Rajouri and Poonch districts since May 1 when two Indian soldiers - JCO Paramjit Singh and BSF head constable Prem Sagar - were killed and beheaded by the neighbouring country’s rogue border action team in KG sector.

The killings triggered heavy exchanges between the two sides in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

A 2003 ceasefire is regularly violated along the LoC and goes up in the summer as the snow melts and mountain passes open through which militants sneak into India. Pakistani troops give cover fire to infiltrators.

New Delhi: Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat and top brass of the force on Sunday paid glowing tributes to the two soldiers who were killed in a militant attack near Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

"For a soldier, work is his religion... Work is worship for us," Gen Rawat said after paying homage to the soldiers - Naik Dipak Kumar Maity and Manivannan G - at Palam airport.

The two soldiers were killed after militants attacked an Army convoy yesterday on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Four other soldiers were wounded in the attack.

We must all pay our respect and homage to these brave soldiers who have attained martyrdom in the line of duty," Gen Rawat added.

The mortal remains of the two soldiers are being taken to their native places where they will be laid to rest with full military honours.

43-year-old Maity hailed from Midnapur in West Bengal and had joined the Army in 1997. He is survived by his wife Rikta and a 13-year-old daughter.

Hailing from Thiruvannamalai in Tamilnadu, 25-year-old Manivannan had started his career in the Army in 2013. He is survived by his parents -- mother G Chinnaponnu and father Gopal G.

Gen Rawat had yesterday visited formations on the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir and was briefed on the operational and logistical preparedness of the force.

During his visit, which followed repeated instances of ceasefire violations by Pakistan in recent times, he exhorted soldiers deployed in the Valley to maintain utmost vigil and operational focus.

He had also called on J&K Governor NN Vohra and discussed the internal and external security management issues in the state.

MANIVANNAN

http://www.thehindu.com/news/nation...ns-its-soldier-manivannan/article18721544.ece

24-year-old soldier G. Manivannan, a resident of Tiruvannamalai, had often spoken about his love to serve the country, and that he wished to die protecting the nation. Four years after his patriotism made him join the Indian Army, the young soldier was killed in an ambush by militants in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

The son of an agricultural labourer and a resident of Theppanandhal village in Tiruvannamalai, Manivannan joined the Army in 2013. “It was his aim from a young age to join the Army and serve the country. When in college, he used to wake up at 4 a.m. and run to be fit. He had several friends in the village,” G. Anand, his younger brother, said.

Manivannan was a gunner (operator) attached to 147 Light AD Regiment. As news of his killing spread in the village, friends and neighbours gathered at his home to mourn the loss of a dear one. It was his phone call that lasted for nearly an hour that his mother, Chinnaponnu, will remember forever. “He called mother at 7 a.m. on Saturday and spoke to her for nearly an hour. He always does it. If he calls family or friends, he will talk for half an hour to one hour. He told her that he will apply for leave and come home on Thursday,” Mr. Anand recalled.

An Army officer and three militants were killed and three soldiers and a civilian injured in an operation against a combined group of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) in Nagaland on Wednesday.

The Army said the civilian, an autorickshaw driver, was killed in the crossfire.

Major David Manlum from the Territorial Army Naga battalion and posted to the Assam Rifles was killed when he was leading the operation in Lapa Lempong and Oting village near Mon.

Sources in the Army said that the joint operation by the Assam Rifles and 12 Para Special Forces of the Army, was launched following specific information on the militants’ movement late night on Tuesday and the encounter began soon after at 23:30 hours.

The three injured soldiers of 12 Para were taken to the military hospital in Johrat and they were reported to be stable.

http://indianexpress.com/article/in...aland-was-set-to-join-nsg-in-2-weeks-4695240/
Two weeks from now he would have come home in Shillong, spent a few days with his parents and younger brother, and then packed off to New Delhi to join the elite National Security Guard (NSG). He did come home on Wednesday, but in a coffin, after he had laid down his life fighting a group of ULFA and NSCN(K) militants in Nagaland a day before.

He had in fact only recently informed his father retired Subedar M Khanzalam that he was selected for the NSG, with his younger brother Siampu Manlun saying he had brought a lot of household items for his mother the last time he came home in Shillong. While his body was flown in to Shillong on Wednesday, the 32-year old Major David Manlun was cremated with full military honour at the Assam Regimental Centre cemetery in Thursday.

“The last time he came home he had brought a lot of household items for mother because he would not get leave soon once he joined the NSG,” Siampu said in Shillong. “Having almost completed his tenure of Nagaland and not yet being satiated by action he had opted for deputation to NSG for which the probation was to begin on June 23,” Guwahati-based Defence Pro Lt Colonel Suneet Newton added.

Born on July 27, 1985 in Imphal, Major Manlun grew up in Shillong where the family had shifted from their native village in Churachandpur district in Manipur. Having graduated from St Anthony’s College, Shillong after completing Class XII from Army Public School in the Meghalaya capital, his first career choice was the Army. “While his father is a retired Subedar, his elder brother is presently serving with the Assam Regiment in Shillong and his only sister is married to an Army officer,” pointed out Lt Col Newton.

Proficient in several languages including English, Hindi, Mizo, Kuki, Paite and Nagamese apart from Zuo, his mother tongue, Major David Manlun was also a keen athlete and footballer, representing both school and college during his student days. Having completed his training in 2009 at the Officer Training Academy, Chennai, he was commissioned into the 1st Battalion the Naga Regiment in March 2010, with his first posting at Naugam in J&K where he took part in number of operations during his two-year stint.

“After spending the next two years at a peace station at Baklow in Himachal Pradesh, he was posted in Nagaland with 164 Bn Territorial Army in 2014. Here also, true to his nature he had been part of number of successful operations, in recognition of which he was awarded with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card on August 15, 2016,” Lt Col Netwon said.

ULFA active in Charaideo

Meanwhile, all the three militants who were killed in the encounter with security forces in Mon district of Nagaland on Tuesday night have turned out to be members of the anti-talk faction of ULFA headed by Paresh Barua, and all of them hailed from Charaideo, an Assam district that shares inter-state boundary with Nagaland.

Confirming this, Charaideo SP Jitmal Doley said the three have been identified as Akani Baishya alias Bipul Asom, Dikom Konwar and Pankaj Malia alias Phanindra Asom. “All the three have been members of the ULFA for quite some time. While Phanindra has been a ULFA member for over 13 years, Akani had joined the outfit in 2008 and Dikom in 2011,” SP Doley told The Indian Express over the telephone.

The SP also said that while 15 to 20 youth from the district have been with the ULFA for the past 10 to 15 years, the outfit has been trying to recruit more boys in the recent past. “Though there have been reports of fresh attempt to recruit new boys, there is no information of anyone joining in the past three years,” he claimed. Myanmar is less than a day’s walk across Mon district in Nagaland from Sonari, the Charaideo district headquarters.

“The ULFA, which works jointly with the NSCN(K), however has been trying to extort money from local businessmen. Unlike in the past when they used to send out extortion notes and then dispatch local linkmen to collect the money, they now call up directly from inside Nagaland or from beyond the India-Myanmar border over the telephone, and ask people to make payments inside Nagaland,” SP Doley said.

People from Assam who go to the adjoining Mon district of Nagaland for petty supply business and stone quarrying, are often forced to make payments in Nagaland, SP Doley said. “Many people of Charaideo district go to Mon for petty business. There are reports that the ULFA and NSCN(K) collect money from them inside Nagaland,” he said.

Local MLA Topon Kumar Gogoi however is worried that the ULFA would try to attract more youth from the district if the government was unable to create employment opportunities for them. “Charaideo is a backward district with very high drop-out and unemployment rates. This makes the youth highly vulnerable. I have suggested to the government and the Army to conduct pre-recruitment training programmes for various security forces, so that the unemployed youth are not lured away by the militant groups,” Gogoi, a BJP legislator who was till two years ago general secretary of the AASU said.
