It is a media war going on right now. The well established mainstream against the alternative internet media. But we shall never underestimate the deceitfulness of the establishment in infiltrating the alternative opinions. They even created and hyped up a putative anti-establishment movement such as PEGIDA just to discredit all other anti-establishment movements.

I really don't know much because I don't live there, but I know there were demonstrations against the arrest of the Spaniards that were fighting in the Donbass. I think there is an ok alternative media and since there are a lot of leftist people, I think its ok, but I can't say for sure.

There was almost no report about the demonstrations in the MSM, at best they were on page 24 in a small corner. The alternative media, OTOH, made quite a wave.

The Ukrainians are doing a pretty good job showing their true nature and at such rate, its going to be more and more difficult for the MSM to hide things, add to that an upcoming war within a few months and the continuing corruption and mismanagement of the economy and in due time, everything will be clear enough.

The Georgians started the war shelling a city and at the same time crying "the Russians are attacking us, the Russians are attacking us", the western press kept repeating the Georgian claims but eventually, lies only go so far.

Agreed. I guess the right strategic response is to discredit the US regime's friendly media and set up alternatives. But without strong corporate backing, the alternative media can hardly go beyond the internet. What is needed is to occupy the airwaves - Television.

The importance of international TV can be seen the US regime's and its media's collective hate attacks on Russia Today in order to discredit it. The more such alternatives are available, the more level the playing field would get.

The US regime media is polluting the air-waves, literally. Only this way they are able to justify the bombing of 75% of the people who rise against tyranny in Yemen, effectively ignoring the fact that, on the same grounds of the people rising up to the tyranny, they have been supporting the minority terrorists and imported (and trained) mercenaries in Syria.

Traditional media is still very important in constructing mainstream ideas.

I too am very particular about my privacy.. heck I even downloaded ghostery(an extension on google) to keep trackers of my back!!

You mean alternatives where your data isn't passed on? Nah bro. Better get your own services i.e. domain, mail server etc. up and running. Even than you are not 100% safe.

The only way that I can see to bring more awareness to people is for those that are already aware of the issues, to spread out information to others by whatever means possible as we do in this forum, etc and as more people become aware, once they reach critical mass, then will ask for change or as in the case of your university, they can ask for an alternative to CNN. Every little bit does make a difference. Deception by control of the so called "free media" is what they use to keep people brainwashed and a grass roots effort is the only practical way to beat them, eventually.
