In interview with Al Manar, Assad says he won't stop Syrian groups attacking Israel in order to liberate the Golan.

Syria received the first shipment of long-range S-300 anti-aircraft missiles from Russia, and would receive the rest "soon," Syrian President Bashar Assad told Lebanese network Al Manar, Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported.

In an interview set to air on the Hezbollah TV network on Thursday evening, Assad repeated past threats to respond immediately should Israel strike in Syria.

He added that the Syrian government will not stand in the way of any Syrian groups that would attack Israel in order to liberate the Golan Heights.

An Israeli official told Reuters on Thursday that Jerusalem is looking into the reports Syria has received the first shipment of S-300 missiles. "I have no information beyond what has been reported, which we are looking into," he said on condition of anonymity.

Russia has said it would deliver the missile system to the Syrian government over Western objections, saying the move would help stabilize the regional balance.

The United States, France and Israel have all called on Russia to stop the delivery.

“Clearly this move is a threat to us,” Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said on Tuesday as he stood outside the IDF Home Front Command’s base in Ramle. The defense minister added that if and when the S-300 missiles are delivered, Israel will "know what to do."

Moscow, ally of Assad's government, appeared to grow more defiant after the European Union let its arms embargo on Syria expire earlier this week, opening up the possibility of arming the rebels battling to topple the president.

More than 80,000 people have died in Syria since peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule led to a civil war that has pitted the president's forces and his ally, Hezbollah, against Syrian rebels and a flow of Sunni Islamist militants who have come to help them from abroad.

Moscow says the lapsing of the EU embargo complicates US and Russian-led efforts to set up a peace conference between the Syrian government and its opponents, who want an immediate end to four decades of Assad family rule.

The Syrian leader said he planned to go to the "Geneva 2" conference, al-Akhbar reported, though he was unconvinced of a fruitful outcome and said he would continue to fight militants seeking his ouster.

Western experts say the air defense system could significantly boost Syria’s ability to stave off outside intervention in the more than two-year civil war that has killed over 80,000 people.

The S-300s can intercept manned aircraft and guided missiles and their delivery would improve the Assad government’s chance of holding out in Damascus. Western nations say the Russian arms deliveries could increase tension and encourage Assad.

Officials in Israel say the S-300 could reach deep into the Jewish state and threaten flights over its main commercial airport near Tel Aviv.

Al-Akhbar said Assad also stressed ties between his forces and Hezbollah militants now openly fighting on the Syrian side of the Lebanese-Syrian frontier.

"Syria and Hezbollah are part of the same axis," al-Akhbar quoted him as telling al-Manar "The Syrian army is the one fighting and leading the battles against the armed group, and this fight will continue until all those who are called terrorists are eliminated."

The Syrian president also harshly criticized Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who he says are funding opposition forces fighting to topple his regime, and said there are some 100,000 armed Arab and other foreign nationalities in Syria fighting for the rebels.

On Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem told Beirut-based news channel Al-Mayadeen that Assad intends to remain president until 2014, after which he will run for a third term if the people want him to, AFP reported.

"Will President Assad run for a third term or won't he, that will depend on conditions in 2014 and the will of the people," Muallem said.

The question is what version of the S-300. It has gone through many alterations and modifications. Older versions of S-300 are pretty much obsolete.

.
All power to Syria. I m not a supporter of Assad and its prerogative of people of Syria to like him or dislike him.

However, I vehemently oppose Europe or America's open intervention and support of FSA terrorists. They could arm the terrorists openly but Syria's legitimate government cant buy defensive weapons? Wake guys to this hypocrisy and open support of terrorists. Stop this juggernaut right in its tracks here and now before it rolls into another country. Today its them, tomorrow it could be you.

May be the one which he already received was(if true) older version and the new ones which russia said to give would be new one, and i don't think Israel would care about the versions...With the name S-300 they may try take out the Weapon ( May be through Covert Operations)

And its funny that he says He won't stand in the way of Syrian Groups attacking Golan Heights to Liberate it from Israel....When the Same Group is Trying to Kill and and over throw his power

If Assad is elected democratically by the people of Syria then what is the west's problem with him being President? I really can't seem to figure out what the conflict is all about

.
I wouldn't take this too seriously without confirmation from external sources.
The USA and Russia are working on a conference regarding the Syrian matter, I doubt Russia would take such actions just before that.

Who is fighting Farely? No One... West and Syria wants Assad gone Since it would Weaken Russia,Iran's Influence in the region. Also Hezbollah would suffer the most... I'm Sure after FSA Beat Assad they would come onto Hezbollah And Golan Heights

Putin defies US aggression

There is no surprise that Russia has delivered S-300 air defense systems to Syria. The US has been screaming for Assad to go for a long time and Russia has a naval base in Tartus. Guess what? Russia is not moving. There is finger pointing between the West and Russia but the political rhetoric is ignored by President Vladimir Putin as he calmly directs stability in the Middle East. His talent as a Judo expert became useful as he told Netanyahu, "We need to talk". Russia was not happy when Israel fired into Damascus early May. The Israeli Prime Minister hastened to Russia last May 14 and did as he was told.

President Putin said, "My colleague and I agree that continuing the armed conflict in the country is fraught with disastrous consequences for both Syria and the region. Only by quickly ending the armed struggle and arriving at a political settlement can we prevent a very negative outcome. In this crucial period it is especially important to avoid actions that could destabilize the situation. The Prime Minister and I agreed to stay in contact: both in personal contact and via our organizations and special services."

Bibi reminded the world, "the great role the Russian people played in stopping Nazi Germany and facilitating victory over it is our shared history. A great many Jews fought in the Red Army. So when you celebrate Victory Day here on May 9, in our country, in another part of the world, we also celebrate that day and salute your contribution to the victory over Nazi Germany."

President Putin does his best to secure stability in the world with economic success while the Communists in America create wars and discord like pyromaniacs. Obama smiles and laughs to his worshipers while elusively avoiding any blame. After all, he's trying his best. His best to oust Assad and fulfill his masters plan of conquest in the Middle East. "Assad must go!" and "What difference does it make!, Clinton shouted. Pure madness displayed for all to see. This from the woman who was trying to get rid of Nixon but was later removed for lying.

Nixon was threatened with impeachment for wiretapping and the Watergate break in. What a terrible thing wiretapping is in life . Especially when compared to the Bengazi fiasco; government funded abortions; trillions in debt; giving weapons to drug dealers along the Mexican border that killed thousands; failure to act quickly in the Gulf oil spill; the Solyndra scandal. The list continues to grow. Amerikan Demonocracy threatening the world.

Little is mentioned of Christians or priests murdered in Syria by the western media. The Christian Bishops that were kidnapped and are now being held hostage are also conveniently ignored. Again the western cry is here reiterated, "What difference does it make! Assad must go!" Amerikan Demonocracy foaming at the mouth rabid with hate and with selfish reasons.

If Putin succeeds in bringing peace to the Middle East by standing up to US aggression he will be the hero of the world. A hero unrecognized and anathema to America and the West. They will never really know about him or appreciate his efforts. Their media keeps yelling, "Putin KGB! Putin Communist!", as though he is as bad as Obama and his real Communist cronies who continually destroy the world.
