lion capital model/totempole excavated from mohenjo daro, 2600-1900 BC shows similar babylonian configuration but from a much earlier era. From babylonian art, it can be ascertained that the model is part of a pillar, probably used for religious purposes, erected near a temple or holy site.

Chandragupta Maurya origins are not known. He may have been from Ghandhara (a kingdom on the Indus Valley)....the Greeks thought he was. He certainly fought to liberate Ghandhara. Ashoka (his Grandson) would later be made prince/governor of Ghandhara. Links between the first empire in South Asia and the Indus valley are very strong.

According to the Buddhist Mahavamsa Tika and Jain Parishishtaparvan, Chandragupta's army attacked the Nanda capital, but was defeated. The Jain text recites the story that Chanakya realized his mistake when he overheard a woman scolding a kid for being dim-witted by going for the centre of a dish and getting burnt, rather than starting out by eating the cooler edges.[46] Chandragupta and Chanakya then began a campaign at the frontier of the Nanda empire, gradually conquering various territories on their way to the Nanda capital.[49] He then refined his strategy by establishing garrisons in the conquered territories, and finally besieged the Nanda capital Pataliputra. There Dhana Nanda accepted defeat, and was killed by Buddhist accounts,[50] or deposed and exiled by Hindu accounts.[51]

Gandhara might have been a Nanda frontier, and semi independent or vassal states which was used a strategy to conquer it first and then move to the Nanda heartland in eastern india.

This also explains why the nandas mobilized an army to fight the alexander's army when they when they had no need of if that territory was not nanda territory.

strabo also confirms that alexander had deprived the indians of gandhara and ariyana
