NEW DELHI: Hinduja group's flagship company Ashok Leyland has joined hands with French firm Nexter Systemsand Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to develop artillery system for the Indian Army.

"Nexter Systems, L&T and Ashok Leyland Defence Systems have signed a consortium agreement to collaborate for the Mounted Gun System (MGS) artillery programme of the Indian Army," Ashok Leyland said in a filing to the BSE.

Under the pact, L&T would act as the prime contractor and Nexter will transfer the final integration and production of the MGS in India to L&T, it added.

The system proposed by the consortium for the MGS programme is a version of 'Caesar artillery system' from Ashok Leyland.

"The partnership among the three companies is based on delivering the best solution and value to the Indian Army," the company said.

The customisation of the systems to fulfill specific Indian requirements will be done in co-operation among the three companies, it added.

Ashok Leyland has established Ashok Leyland Defence System Ltd specifically to address requirement for specialist vehicles meant only for the defence forces and security agencies.

The company's scrip closed at Rs 32.65, down 1.51 per cent, on the BSE.

As has already been said; TATA and AL are competing entities. Plus TATA has already tied up with DENEL for a competing bid, IIRC.

The sad thing is, that this kind of team ups doesn't necessarily give us the best system. The Denel gun is better, while TATA made a poor choice with the big and heavy 8x8. On the other side the Ashok Leylands 6x6 would be a good choice for mobility and air transportability, but the gun has several limitations.

No, we need competition to get lower prices and more industrial benefits, so competition is much needed in India! But in such competitions I wonder if it would be better to let the indigenous companies compete eachother to provide the best platform for the requirements of the forces, while the foreign vendors compete eachother with their guns only. At the end the best platform vendor and the best gun vendor with team up, which would make sure that the forces gets the best of both sides and not only one or the other.

Who are the subsidiaries here?
Not TATA Defence Systems which is of the TATA group and AL Defence Systems which belongs to the Hinduja group of companies respectively. Apart from being Indian, there is absolutely no common connection between them at all.

Well I remember reading that a consortium formed by AL and L&T were the lowest bidders for multibarel rocket launchers.So whats new this time??? Is it about Nexter???
About Nexter, then again L&T-Nexter partnership offering caesar was pitted against TATA power SED (which was considered the cheapest option way back in 2012.
So whats new in this news???
