As the New India Rises, So Do Slums Of Laborers

yes, my dear sir, i had visted india already more than six times, and i find slums every where, each and every city in india, can you name just one city in india, where you dont have slums?
even , just after ALLAHBAD in UP there is a small village name , doodhi and it also , got a slum:lol:

Good then, Whats the reason to be happy about?

.
Dear Neo;sir
Sory sir, i would like to differ with you on the issue, & i would like to introduce to you the real reason behind india's booming hunger & its huge slums.
the biggst reason of the booming hunger & largest (slum population in the world) & in india ! was the unjustifyed cast system in the existing indian hindu culture, where a vast of majorty of lower class hindus forced to live in the unhuman conditions throughout india, its not just only the bigger cites, where the lower class are living in the slums, even in villages, and small towns the have the same pattren of life as they are having in thier bigger cites.

it is a open reality, that upper class, midlle class , lower middile class indian hindus cant eat, drink or sit together with lowest class indian hindus, even they cant share the same area of living.

its not agricultural growth ,LSM industry, SME, construction, transport and infrastructure which usually attacts low skilled labor and ecourages exodus from farms to urban area's, its only unjustifyed hindu cast culture , which every indian should be ashamed off?:smokin::agree:

Assuming for a hypothetical moment that the highlighted portion is correct. Wonder why Muslims, Christians & other non Hindus live in slums too ? They should be un affected by the Hindu caste system ..shouldn't they ?

The answer my friend is that there are simply too many of us in India. I don't know why guys here are so hung up on the caste system.

Do Shias / Sunnis love each other ? Are Bohras & ahmediyas accepted ? Didn't Protestants / Catholics go for each others throats ?

Education & development are the key to remove such anomalies wherever they exist.

Dear third eye; sir
i dont want go in the details of ,suffereings of the Muslims, Christians & other non Hindus communities living in india. it can be detected easily through riots against them , after every 1 or 2 year after?

but, they (Muslims, Christians) are the minorty ,of the poor majorty living in the slums in every city in india, but i am sure !you will find a very huge majorty of lowest class of hindus living there?:agree:
Still in pakistan Shias / Sunnis can sit & drink water in the same glass together even some of them hate each other , but i am affraid
that a high class hindu cant do same that ,with a lowest class hindu? i guss they cant sit together.:agree::D

Yes Neo bhai, these slums are nothing for our Indian friends to be ashamed of.

Like the caste system, untouchability, female infanticide, female featal abortion, farmer suicide, minority discrimination, corruption, religiously motivated lynch mobs are anything to be ashamed of...

By saying petting things and assuming it is the majority does not go well.

.
Assuming what is the majority?? It is true, the majority of Indians are not of a low caste, but around 25 percent of the Indian population is scheduled caste or tribe. This does not even include the huge number of other backward castes in INdia.

Isn't that bad enough? You have enslaved almost a quarter of your population with the self invented myth of the superior Aryan Brahmin, etc.?

female infanticide and abortion is not common place?? is that why there is a shortage of around 130 million women in India today?? How many more millions have been killed in the 20th century? How much worse should the problem get till it is felt by the majority?

If it is such a small minority involved in lynch killings, religious riots then why don't you aprehend the criminals and get rid of it once and for all?? but how can you, as instead of punishing them you elect them to the highest offices in the land.

And there have been at least around 180,000 farmer suicides in the past decade alone...Is that still not a wake up call for you, Mr Jeypore? Or are you waiting for a majority of all farmers to take their lives along with their children's?

For an Indian it may seem petty, but for any self respecting person these stats should make their heads bow with shame...But seeing some of the Indians here, wishful thinking, that.

:D guys why are you pi.ssin them. Go easy

hi jana, I havent been here too long, but ive come across many of your threads..i'll leave that for another day. Im not sure if you've followed up on the rest of the debate but neo's reply will make it clear that this article actually highlights the current dilemma india faces due to its rapid growth, and also shows that there are people out there that care and are trying to make a difference.

You said that u visited each and every city in India right? So have u visited Trivandrum, kochi, calicut, Trishur, Salem, Coimbatore, Tanjavor etc. these are some of the South Indian cities where u wont find any slum. Dont judge any place just after seeing a portion of it. India is huge and diverse. you cant explore or understand fully the whole of India in ur life time.:agree:

.
whoops, i lost my connection there for a quick second, getting back to the subject, darkstar my man, things don't change overnight, you should understand that change is gradual. India faces a lot of problems today, but as the article shows there are people that are trying. yeah they have communal violence, but how often does that happen in urban centers? rural india is very poor and very illiterate, ten or maybe 20 years from today hopefully things will look a little different. all of india's social problems can be tackled by spreading education and employment, a gargantuan task but it seems the government is making an effort, im sure someone here can dig up that article on singh's massive rural employment scheme.
its unfair to say that indians should bow their heads in shame, because a lot of us aren't the religious fanatics you think we are, take it from a so called 'superior aryan brahmin' and i can assure you that no one in my entire family (its huge man) has ever thought of themselves as being better than anyone else because of some inherited birth right or something.

calicut slums.........ADB on Cities Alliance: Initiating Workshop in India - ADB.org

trivandrum slum......The Hindu : Kerala / Thiruvananthapuram News : Slum modernisation project set to take off

coimbatore slums....The Hindu : Tamil Nadu / Coimbatore News : ‘Slum areas vulnerable to HIV/AIDS’

I think you yourself still have not managed to visit these places. Or was it the shine from shining india that blinded you to them??

I can show more evidence of slums in all the other cities that you suggested, but I think these are enough.

don't think you will get away with making such comments on this forum.

below are pics of a calicut slum being visited by the mayor of calicut ,,,enjoy

good post! Although, i think its a bit disinenguous to pin the blame on the rural community.

Yes, in some aspects of Jati protectiveness, teh rurals are still following the old ways...

However, most disrimination, riots, mob killings actually happen in urban areas, big metropolitan cities. I don't think I need to give you examples, as you are probably well aware yourself.

Mr. Batmannow, thank you for your insightful analysis of the referred phenomenon.

There are two ways to look at it; a simple and subjective observation which obviously seems to be the case here. Its called prejudice and we all possess it to some level. The other and smarter way would be an analysis of the dynamics which have caused the phenomenon with an open mind so we would see the broader picture.

Now we should ask ourselves what we want to do with our observation or opinion and how valid it is:
We can share it with tons of irritating smilies in a non-India centric forum and feel good about it.
Or we can improve our understanding by engaging an intelligent (and smilies free) debate and be appreciative for the time and effort poeple put into it to answer your questions so you would get an better and objective look at it.

Its so much easier to understand many things if we approach the topic with an objective and open mind.

Eventhough we don't have a cast pyramid in Pakistan we do have slums in almost all major cities, they're smaller in size compared to India but should we be proud of it?

Just remember that greatness of a nation is never measured by failing of others.
Give it a though...:coffee:

don't presume that Chinese migrant workers have to sleep in streets, in outskirts or on the Mars.

during the course of urbanization in China, there emerges many villages-in-town. real estate and development zones lead the city expansion which engulfs adjacent villages, and then purchase land from the former villagers for commercial development.

the unsold land of villages-in-town are full of speculative buildings by the villagers with their land compensation of the sold-out part of land. those houses are not of any unified planning and usually not decorated, and of course with much cheaper rental. but they are real houses rather than any slum.

that's how Chinese migrant workers are accommodated.

I'm not looking down on slums but things in China are kinda different.
Actually we've adopted a very weird behavior. We are making fun of others just to deflect the attention off of us. Pakistanis deflect it to India, India to us, India to China, Pakistan to America, its a web of a mess.

This thread is not a real discussion of anything important. Economic dev. is focused around how it affects Pakistan. I'm shifting this to the member's club.

.
Just remember that greatness of a nation is never measured by failing of others.

I think it is a matter of perspective. The following quotes may help to clarify -

""Whether a nation be mighty today and rich or not depends not on the abundance or security of its power and riches, but principally on whether its neighbours have more or less of it." German mercantilist Von Hornigk – From Paul Kennedy – ‘The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers (First Published 1988)

and

“... the power of a nation-state by no means consists only in its armed forces, but also in its economic and technological resources; in the dexterity, foresight and resolution with which its foreign policy is conducted; in the efficiency of its social and political organization. It consists most of all in the nation itself, the people; their skills, energy, ambition, discipline, initiative; their beliefs, myths and illusions. And it consists, further, in the way all these factors are related to one another. Moreover national power has to be considered not only in itself, in its absolute extent, but relative to the state's foreign or imperial obligations; it has to be considered relative to the power of other states." C. Barnett – The Collapse of British Power (1972) cited in Paul Kennedy – ‘The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers’ (1988) pg 260

I think we may be generous to India to suggest that Pakistan and Bangladesh also have slums but I am sure India does compare the size of their slums with ours because it directly relates to their national greatness and regional power ambitions and the impression thereof. For example, an American who has lived in Bangladesh for the last 20 years recently commented to me that India was a giant slum with tiny pockets of wealth. For him this is an assertion of American power and greatness in relation to that of India.

Dear Batmannow.. It pains me to see a lot of ppl with misinterpretations and misconceptions of the Caste system.. It even more irritates me to see that Jana is thanking you for that post, although i had told her very clearly what exactly the situation is.. I hate to repeat myself about the same thing over and over again, in different forums.. If you are really interested to know about the ground reality and if you are really want to add to your knowledge about my country, you are free to contact me anytime in private..
