That's similar to the word for blacks: kala (meaning black) is acceptable. The derogatory variation 'kaloo' or 'kulloo' is considered racist.

That is what I thought.

Also, I wish people would credit us with the ability to recognize when someone has made a mistake, and when someone is being deliberately offensive. It is not that difficult, when phrases like "slanty-eyed" or "faggot" almost always accompany the word in question.

Buddy, I'm not stupid. I have ONLY EVER seen it used, when Indians are angry for some reason, and are trying to attack us.

Though I will bear that in mind, in case some Indian guy "accidentally" says that to my face in Hong Kong. It's not hard to tell when someone has made a genuine mistake and when someone is being very deliberate.

Here in Australia, Indian, Pakistanis, Lankans and Bangladeshis are called curries Even the curries call themselves curry. Nothing racist about it, its just that no one bothered giving an actual name to our race

That is a very good question. I'd be interested to see that as well.

I think to be considered "acceptable slang".... there should be at least hundreds of examples from official statements, and/or respectable media sources. No blogs, etc.

There's a world of difference: when south Asians call each other curry, like when blacks call each other the n-word, it's considered acceptable. But when the word is used by an outsider, it becomes racist.

I am sure Chinese people call each other some funny name, but it would not be appropriate for an outsider to use that word.
