Army offers to assist govt on PM’s Housing plan

If you tell me which country has seen army rule the country for half it's history, I will be glad to give you examples. And trust me running a country is bigger 'burden' then building some houses.

Cheerio ....

lol
Thats why running the country .cant be left in hands of only the army...
They start thinking whole country is corner plots of bharia...

. .
our army has to be the only army in the world that sell plot on land alloted by govt for military use! kamal hai!

. .
where exactly will they build 5m houses??
will they be houses or apartment buildings?

This is my new house..moving in dis diwali..everyone welcome for a tea...

. .
Any reason? The army is like any other organ of the state subject to being used in advancing strategic national interests. And building 5 million housing units for the poor calls for war footing or does Pakistan want Indian style slumdog towns everywhere?

In America the US Army Corp of Engineers is regularly used for instance in flood control works etc and keeping Missisipi River tamed.
That's on an emergency basis, the US Army Corp of Engineers don't do menial labor.

My own personal opinion is that, instead of getting involved directly, offer training to poor people, who could be used to do these jobs, and help reduce unemployment along side poverty.

Probably a mix. They'll likely get rid of old infrastructure, and allot new land to existing cities, for the purpose of housing development.

Guess corruption is part of the nation.

10 times better than the crap built in the US. Desi architecture and interior design for the middle class is wayy ahead of the trash in the united states.
Eh, it depends on where you live.

In Canada at least, places like Toronto city can cost millions of dollars for a 2 bedroom apartment, but move to anywhere in Alberta (province) and you can buy a massive house (built with high quality materials) for dirty cheap.

I imagine it's a similar story in the states, where state lines can mean the difference between $1 to $5 for a box of milk

It is the same, but in terms of good architecture and styles that arent cookie cutter style you are looking at above a mil easy in every state.

I was thinking of the army being part of the effort not the sole effort. Nothing wrong in use all sources to get the job done.

Does this sound to you like 'menial'?

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)[5] is a U.S. federal agency under the Department of Defense and a major Army command made up of some 37,000 civilian and military personnel,[1] making it one of the world's largest public engineering, design, and construction management agencies. Although generally associated with dams, canals and flood protection in the United States, USACE is involved in a wide range of public works throughout the world. The Corps of Engineers provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public, and provides 24% of U.S. hydropower capacity.

The corps' mission is to "Deliver vital public and military engineering services; partnering in peace and war to strengthen our Nation's security, energize the economy and reduce risks from disasters."[6]

Their most visible missions include:

    • Hydroelectric Power. The Corps of Engineers was first authorized to build hydroelectric plants in the 1920s, and today operates 75 power plants, producing one fourth of the nation's hydro-electric power—or three percent of its total electric energy. This makes USACE the fifth largest electric supplier in the United States.
    • Shore Protection. With a large proportion of the U.S. population living near our sea and lake shores, and an estimated 75% of U.S. vacations being spent at the beach, there has been Federal interest — and a Corps of Engineers mission — in protecting these areas from hurricane and coastal storm damage.
    • Dam Safety. The Corps of Engineers develops engineering criteria for safe dams, and conducts an active inspection program of its own dams.[25]
    • Water Supply. The Corps first got involved in water supply in the 1850s, when they built the Washington Aqueduct. Today USACE reservoirs supply water to nearly 10 million people in 115 cities. In the drier parts of the Nation, water from Corps reservoirs is also used for agriculture.[7][25][35]
    • Water Safety. The Corps of Engineers has taken an interest in recreational water safety, with current initiatives for increasing the use rate of life jackets and preventing the use of alcohol while boating.

The only thing they don't seem to do is make donuts ...

Yup.
In the town where I live in America, there are three surrounding lakes. All man-made: Made and managed by the US Army C. of Eng.

Question: Are these 5 million housing units being built by the govt and offered completely free? Where they will be built?

To be hinest with you, those sound like national security projects, rather than menial labor.

That is very true. No country on earth has zero corruption. In any large project [including in UK] dodgy deals will take place. Shady transactions will play but that is no reason for not to engage in large projects. Pakistan Army is not overstretched and if it is god help it in war with India. We don't accept line infantry or armoured corps to pitch in building houses. I was thinking of army engineering and quartermaster to share experiance. The private sector in Pakistan is not large enough and is too fragmented. The larger concerns only deal with housing for rich.

Oh okay. You guys will know more then me on conditions prevailing on the ground.
Chalar ama yapar....steals but builds/works/etc........

Not free.. But they are being offered on very easy installments through regular banking system. So far, NBP and one more bank are really interested in this..

The places have not been finalized yet, however, govt. has decided to use government owned land only. So, the land will not be bought, which means, the housing societies may be built outside of the main cities mostly.
