Many Indians do want to destroy Pakistan. India had a chance in 1971, but US prevented its that sole chance. The agreement was that India would withdraw and US won't attack. So India withdraw and gave up on that chance to conquer Pakistan. That was a smart move. The alternative would have been India split up into multiple pieces.

Where do you hear such nonsense from?

Despite significant losses, West Pakistan still had sufficient military reserves, capable of holding off the Indian forces, and in UN ,Poland had proposed a resolution for mutual ceasefire, which the Soviets made it clear they wouldn't veto.

Had India attacked West Pakistan, India would have lost all the gains made so far. The political objectives were already met.
