if i am not mistaken sigma motors are selling Defender 90s' and 110' in price range starting from 2M and goes up to 3.5m.

3.5M is the upgraded version is it not? I personally am a ardent fan of defenders, they last a lifetime.

i dont think PA must waste or use if you like money on importing such vehicles.
what we msut look forward to is to develop engines at home. if can start developing engines of this light/medium category in terms of HP, the jeeps wont be a problem.
pakistan need to develop infrastructure to start making its on engines atleast for the armoured Jeeps ans PAC's.

i hope many will agree with this.

regards!

Vehicle manufacturing ab initio is no joke. There are so many specialized items. For example fuel injection system, suspension, axle, upholstery, electrics etc are all made by different companies. It would be quite a while before Pakistan is capable of manufacturing any 4x4 motor vehicle from scratch. Even in Europe, engines are made at a different factory and body at a different factory even in a different country.

Economy of scale is also important. It is far more economic to import the vehicle as CKD (complete knock down) condition and assemble the same. HIT is doing a great job converting the basic vehicle into specailized versions.

GP vehicles (that is why it was called a Jeep) for military use have to be especially strong. These are slung underneath a helicopter or dropped with a parachute from C-130 in a hostile environment. The vehicle should be sturdy enough to take such beating and be driven off right away.

Willys Jeep and Land Rover Defender are the only real all purpose military vehicles and these have a very long life. Don’t think PA is wasting money; they have the best vehicle in the world.

Sir, the Land Rovers which PA is using are not of the same quality as are the ones being built abroad or for civilian purposes. There is a marked difference, have heard many officers talking about the quality of these vehicles.

The company which did the contract with the Army for supplying the Rovers and has the dealership for Pakistan, Sigma Motors has a retired Colonel of PA as director who has or had pretty good contacts when he got the contract for these vehicles and you won't believe the cost they charged per vehicle. It was nearly the same as the imported ones of the highest quality, even so, they used to be assembled in Pakistan at some leased plant of manufacturing vehicles which was not running at full production status.

If you sit in the PA Defender and an imported one, you will see the difference, the interior panels have lot of Pakistani input, meaning the leather and card board stuff used. But they charged nearly the same as an imported one.

So now you guys can guess, why this deal happened and who benefited the most.

All Land Rovers were built tough; my father had an 'ancient' one built in the 50s ! Great memories of that machine. Later a Willys CJ-3 made in India. But it did'nt really compare.
Good to hear that Land Rovers are used extensively by the PA, have some investment there as well as in the owner company TATA Motors (which i inherited from my father). Interesting that an Indian-owned company supplies vehicles to the PA; not a bad thing at all. Globalisation has its good parts.
BTW, where are the pictures of HIT made jeep, or did i miss it?
