Armata - Russia’s Top-Secret Battle Tank Captured on Video

left an right positions have 3 vision blocks. center position has 1 > 3 positions, witdth the middle one slightly forward of the other two...

No, i think there is 3 hatches. How can you see only two? At lest optics on hull is for 3 crewmans.

Those vision blocks i notice, what i don't notice is a third hatch, maybe it is there but just plush with the hull so it is hard to spot. Those vision blocks also look interesting because left hatch and right hatch vision block do not look the same nor do the vision blocks all match in appearance. I suspect that some of those are cameras.

A commander would get more blocks than the gunner: both would be using remote sights anyway. I suspect the commandar can view the 'blind' gunner side by wide-angle camera, which could take up a vision block from the gunner position.

It may be that the driver doesn't have a hatch of his own.

Russia's new battle tank appeared Tuesday after its first official photo was revealed in an image released by the country's defense ministry. The Armata T-14 is a part of an ambitious -- and costly -- revamping of the country's military. The Russian Defense Ministry published the photo ahead of Moscow's Red Square Parade set for May 9, a celebration in which 10 of the new T-14 Armata battle tanks will appear, the Moscow Times reported.

The heavily armored T-14 is the main battle version of the Russian Armata tank and features a 125mm gun that is remotely controlled, with an unmanned turett. The photo of the tank was first posted on the ministry's site in a section about Victory Day, Russia's celebration of the 70-year anniversary of the end of World War II. Images first leaked of the highly anticipated tanks in late March.

The tanks are a part of Russia's plan to update its military, and it has proven costly with the country attempting to maintain its plan to spend 23 trillion rubles ($433 billion) despite economic contraction, Bloomberg reported.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov has called for the plan to be scaled back, while Moscow-based Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) has called the rearmament strategy and outdated Soviet approach.

“The modern Russian economy just doesn’t generate enough resources to finance the current 2011-2020 rearmament program,” CAST said in a report, according to Bloomberg. “This seriously reduces the ability to efficiently renew the Russian armed forces’ equipment.”

The rearmament plan has remained a priority for President Vladimir Putin, with defense spending staying as planned, despite 10 percent budget cuts in most other areas. Defense spending accounts for a third of the overall budget in Russia, Bloomberg reported, with the country's economy expected to contract by as much as four percent, amid a down oil market and conflict in Ukraine.

With growing tension in Europe, Russia has continued to increase its presence in Ukraine with an estimated 9,000 active personnel and troops in the eastern part of the country in early April. The conflict between supposedly Russian-backed separatists and the Ukrainian government has caused more than 6,000 deaths. The Kremlin denies any involvement in the conflict, however.

Russia's new tanks will be just one part of a larger celebration Russia has set for 26 cities, the Moscow Times reported.

Size comparison between the Armata and T-72...

If these comparisons are right then we're seeing a total break with Russian tank evolution and seeing something radically different.

All bets are off. We can eyeball it being bigger than their legacy vehicles. We know that they've gone to an unmanned turret...they told us so....the only question left is the weapons fit and we shall know that in 7 days.

I'm more convinced than ever that we're on the verge of an armored vehicle race.
Sidenote: Is it just me or does the Armata seem to have more ground clearance than the T-72...and the Abrams, Leopard, and Challenger.

MOSCOW, May 8. /TASS/. The new generation combat platform Armata is capable of carrying any special equipment and weapons, the deputy CEO of Uralvagonzavod in charge of special vehicles production, Vyacheslav Khalitov, has told TASS.

"We are prepared to cope with any task, because we have created a universal platform with a variety of configurations, with rear-, middle-and front-engine layouts. This allows for equipping the chassis with any special gear or armaments," Khalitov said.

At the moment work is in progress to convert the platform into an armoured repair and recovery vehicle.

"Armata was conceived as a parent platform for a wide variety of vehicles. Future configurations will depend on the client," Khalitov said.

The information and control system of the Armata-based tank is capable of warning the crew of potential problems, Khalitov went on to say.

"The machine’s information and control system issues early warnings about likely problems. Before, the crew had to wait for a problem to occur. Now the electronic brain issues early prompts," Khalitov said, adding that Armata was resistant to many human errors.

The remote control function is one of the tank’s key features.

"We have reserved an opportunity for robotics solutions," Khalitov said. "Three should be no haste, though, because, this idea can materialize only after artificial intelligence, powerful enough to assess the battlefield situation and make the correct decision proceeding from it, has been created. At this point only a human being can do that."

If need be, Armata’s crew will be able to control the gun manually from the isolated armoured capsule, Khalitov said.

"In developing Armata we proceeded from the dual redundancy principle regarding any process. For instance, the fire control system contains a manual control and firing option," he said.

Armata’s turret is unmanned. The crew inside the armoured capsule is isolated from both ammunition and fuel.

"In case of a direct hit the chances the crew will stay alive are very high," Khalitov said.

Another advantage of the uninhabited turret is the tank is more viable on the whole.

The demonstration of the Armata-based tank at the international Russia Arms Expo - 2015 in Nizhni Tagil will be open only to select few, Khalitov said.

"We do hope that the Defence Ministry will turn an attentive ear to our request and let us show Armata at the international exhibition of weapons and military hardware Russia Arms Expo - 2015. But even if that happens, the demonstration will be secret. The vehicle is still classified," Khalitov said.

He added it would be wrong to show Armata too early, still more so, to show it to Western counterparts who would certainly be invited to the show.

Armata is a heavy unified platform created for a variety of armoured vehicles, standing next to the medium class Boomerang and Kurganets, as well as light Typhoon. The tanks and other armoured vehicles based on that platform will appear in the May 9 Red Square parade alongside other types of military hardware of the future.

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 5. /TASS/. A manufacturer in Novosibirsk has started batch production of ceramic armor components for the family of new generation armored vehicles.

"Ceramic armor testing has been completed this year. All expected properties have been confirmed. Batch production has begun," the chief of the ceramic armour bureau NEVZ-Ceramics, Andrey Nikitin, told TASS on the sidelines of the 3rd international forum Tekhnoprom on Friday.

He did not disclose any production statistics. Ceramic armor components will be used for combat vehicles based on the Armata, Kurganets and Boomerang platforms. The vehicles displayed at the V-Day May 9 parade in Moscow were equipped with ceramic armor elements.

Nikitin said that combined ceramic-steel armour plates enhance the armored vehicle’s protection 50% in contrast to that of their full metal counterparts.

"For instance, a 24 mm armor roller is capable of withstanding the impact of a 14.5 mm bullet," he said. Also, the vehicle’s mass and ground pressure go down significantly noticeably enhancing its cross-country capacity.

TASS: Russia - Armata tank’s armor invulnerable for existing antitank missiles — designer
June 06, 12:25 UTC+3
MOSCOW, June 6. /TASS/. The armor of the state-of-the-art Russian T-14 tank on the Armata platform ensures protection from all modern tank projectiles, antitank guided missiles and grenade launchers, the Scientific and Research Institute of Steel (makes part of Tractor Plants) told TASS Saturday.

"The armor of Armata ensures protection from all modern and promising tank ammunition having the 120-millimeter caliber," an Institute spokesman said, adding that the armor also protects from antitank missiles and hand grenade launchers with the calibers of 100-150 millimeters.

A number of existing antitank systems are capable of attacking targets not only directly but also from above, which makes it possible to destroy all types of modern tanks. Besides, most combat helicopters are armed with guided missiles that hit tanks’ upper part, which is less protected.

Armata is a heavy unified platform serving as a base for a tank and an infantry combat vehicle. The new tanks have received unmanned turrets, all digital control and isolated armored crew capsules. The key armament of Armata is a 125-mm gun, but the use of a 152-mm gun is not ruled out in the future. Earlier Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said an Armata shell "burns a meter of steel."

The Armata tanks were showcased during the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9, 2015. These are experimental prototypes that returned to their manufacturer plant for improvement and later tests in troops, which are to be held in 2016. Serial production of Armatas is expected to start in 2017-2018.
