I dont intend to start a flame war. and any idiot who even tried to come off sarcastic.. drags in something else.. will get a ban..

But..
Isnt it time.. a certain review by the GoI is done on the DRDO?
Generally.. one expects Mk2's to meet a higher target than the original. But in this case, I think the target for the Mk2 was the same as that set for the Mk1..(off from the BR site).
It is a new tank.. and like others in the region.. has had teething problems, but has the Tejas's delays (due to the changing requirements) not taught lessons? A lesson from history perhaps.. the M2 Bradley went through even worse..
But then, considering the pace at which India is equipping.. will the Arjun be able to keep up?
Perhaps a "whats ready in India and the rest we get from elsewhere" policy would have been better.. and the indigenization part.. could have been gradual.. and over time. So the training part.. the logistical setups.. the integration could be done.
The impression a Mk2 gives to a world market.. is that the first wasnt good enough anyway.. so why buy Indian.. when that is clearly not the case.
This line infact.. is what gives that impression..

For all intents and purposes, the Arjun Mk2 main battle tank (MBT) — currently under development since mid-2007, will be more expensive and have a higher imported content than its predecessor, the Arjun Mk1. But in terms of mobility, protection and firepower, the Mk2 variant will come closest to what Indian Army HQ wants: an MBT with highly enhanced crew protection and maximum survivability in high-intensity, fire-saturated combat environments

Especially for the IA.. to wait for a tank with such potential.. and then find out there is a Mk2 needed to get them what they really wanted.. will..no matter how confident its users are... a dent on the faith in R&D.
nobody gets it right the first time, and its never better to just make do with what you have..
But then ambitious goals.. must be given moderated deadlines.

Mk2 will have better accuracy and higher target range than mk1. It will get total 93 upgrades. Its mainly a new tank.

All initial teething problems have been resolved. If Mk2 starts trial this summer it will start production in 2013. In next two years it will undergo various trials, if there are some problems they will be fixed. Army may want some changes.

But then, considering the pace at which India is equipping.. will the Arjun be able to keep up?

Arjun is much better than latest T-90M which army getting now. so it should be fine until 2025.

They are more engaging for indignation. Arjun mk2 supposed to have 90% indigenous.

The impression a Mk2 gives to a world market.. is that the first wasnt good enough anyway.. so why buy Indian.. when that is clearly not the case.

Pls do not believe what prasun sengupa tells. he has proved to be a false.

I understand what you say is correct and logical. If the Arjun Mk2 is what IA wants and need than they should have go for Leopard 2A6 not T-90S or T-90M. Arjun mr1 defeating T-90S completely in comparative trials is proof. IA has a reputation of not going for indigenous staffs.

But then ambitious goals.. must be given moderated deadlines.

I believe they should.. India needs to be independent on its way to be a world actor the likes of the US.
Relying on the arms of others isnt the way to go about it.

The Arjun looks the better tank, it has been designed for this region.. it should be better.. otherwise whats the point

see we are buying another 124 mk2 or few more and production line will be active till 2016-17 , all the R&D effort for our next generation tanks which is at design phase and from 2020 it's production line will starts

These are bunch of jokers who run the force website.

Arjun MK1 already has got more than what the indian army had wished for. the only problem was it required a shift in the mindset of IA and its logistics. IA has been using russian made armour that is significantly lighter than what arjum is today. Arjun weighs at 58.5 tons, which is significantly heavier than the Soviet-legacy tanks. This created logistics nightmare for IA and required changes to the army's logistics establishment, including new railroad cars and new bridges.

Today, IA has already inducted 124 arjuns and Bogie Flat Arjun Tank (BFAT) wagons have been handed over to the army. MK2 has come out just in one year after the the gov approval. its not that they are in development since 2007 as per prasun. The defence ministry, last May, had given its nod to DRDO to develop the Arjun MkII MBT which would have enhanced features over the first lot of 124 tanks that have been delivered to the army over the last two years.

The FMBT will be indigenous based on arjuns or on the learnings of Arjun

Nobody denying here that 1st batch of Arjun faced problems but hey DRDO met its goal to remove those teething problem and even this is proved so many times ... Just look at the last batch of Arjun mk1 isn't it outclass and outgun T 90 Bhishma ??? Right now army gave the preproduction order of Mk2 ,once it completed its trail ,am sure Arjun will win some 400-500 more units from Army ...

:agree:

arjun is modeled like traditionally superior heavy western tanks unlike lighter soviet tanks.

note the protection of arjun mk2.

newer kanchan composite armor
ERA plates
infrared jammer
visbility and heat suppression
laser warning and jammer
active protection system

all these will increase weight of the tank to 60 ton but they are going for 1500 HP indigenous engine without compromising protection of the tank.

The weight is still ok..
Considering the Deserts in the southern border have generally hard terrain.. if one was to call them deserts...

DONT UNDERTSTAND THE FUSS of steadily progressive improvements of both ARJUN MK1 TO MK2 or indeed TEJAS MK1 TO MK2..

i AM CORRECT in suggesting this is exatly wat happens the world over with all weapons ie improving block by block
