Arjun MK-II user trials kicked off in Rajasthan

Here's the list of 19 major modifications that the Arjun Mark II. The list was finalized after extensive user opinion canvassing and feedback from the DGQA, DGEME, OFB, DGMF and DRDO.

1. Missile firing capability

If MKII still has a rifled barrel, hoiw can it have missile firing capability?

Let's get one thing clear. Arjun is Indianized version of highly successful German Leopard 2A4, considered to be the world's best tank. Successful use of Leopard 2A4 in Afghanistan and it's US counterpart M1 in Iraq, both desert countries, proves the army's claim of "heavy tank" hollow.
The T90 is a souped up T72 which were massacred by the US M1s in the two Gulf wars. Hence, it's no wonder that Arjun proved to be far superior than T90.
With slew of corruption scandals involving the top brass and a political party shows why there is such extreme reluctance to induct superior indigenous products which save vast foreign exchange but yield no kickbacks to top brass and politicians.
Mr.A.K.Anthony, under whose rule we have seen maximum defense scandals, needs to be a man for once, and tell the Army and Air Force to stop throwing tantrums for foreign toys and to use made in India products. Charity begins at home.

With a 120 mm rifled gun, the Arjun is capable of firing APFSDS (Kinetic Energy) rounds, HE, HEAT, High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) rounds at the rate of 6-8 rounds per minute and the Israeli developed semi-active laser guided LAHAT missile.

The LAHAT (Laser Homing Attack or Laser Homing Anti-Tank) is a third generation semi-active laser homing low-weight anti-tank guided missile manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries. It was designed primarily to be fired by Merkava tanks' 105 mm and 120 mm tank guns, though it matches all types of 105 mm and 120 mm guns, including low recoil guns.

Man on this forum people are only fanboys..........they keep on abusing u without providing any information, and no one admits that we are importing all the components indivisually and just assembling it

The chai-biscuit organisations like drdo need to be privatised

Why don't you and @sardar1987 spend sometime reading?

You are comparing a t-72 of the iraqi army with a t90m? Seriously? The reason why nobody is providing you 'information' is because its there in the threads. With details on how each and every model of the tanks are different. With specific information of armour, gun, rounds with technical data. Then you call the Arjun a souped up Lepard? How so? Because both have 1500 hp engine? Care to explain how the guns are different? The armour is different? The missiles fired are different?

The problem is couple of newbie fanboys want everything spoonfed. And seriosuly, if you think the rest are 'fanboys' nobody is requesting you 2 jokers to post? Past couple of days all the threads have been spammed by you "asking for information". Members assume you will read the elevant threads unless it is some new data you have which can be discussed. Btw, a few of the chaps replying to your queries (not me) are people who are actually from the defence establisment.

i am not comparing anything.............see my posts,,,am just saying even russia has stopped inducting t-90 and is making a better tank.

prove me wrong

and arjun must take precedence over t-90 and be inducted in huge numbers

The comparison comment was for rathore. everybody on this forum will agree arjun should be given precedence over t90.

On the other, the Army has made no commitment to inducting the Arjun Mk.II in large numbers even if trials are successful, which means there is no guarantee that that the Army will operate a fleet of 240 (124 + 116) Arjuns of both variants.

With this statement anyone can understand the level of corruption.

But guess what.......it won't be!!!

And i will be proved right,,,,just look at this video and have ur opinion, video maybe old but still tells a lot

Defence Line Army's Battle With Arjun 23 June 2012 Part 1 - YouTube

Assholes looting the nation.....................same will happen to lca, mark my words dude

If u want to increase your knowledge, then my post will be useful, else... who knows..

As far I know regular Rifled gun can't fire missiles because it will hurt the missile. The solution (Jugad is) ,Fix the missile into a rotating case the case will rotate, while missile will have no rotational motion.

Imagine a Bicycle where Wheel rotates while Axles are fixed. The barrel of Gun and Missiles are fixed while there is a bearing connecting two has rotational motion...

I tried to give answer in lay-man language.. Hope it will help you..

Note that the 120 MM gun in the Merkava is smoothbore, not rifled.

This is actually useful - thanks.

So much trouble for rifled guns - why don't we move to smoothbore guns? Almost all MBTs have smoothbore guns nowadays.

Yes I do agree, But we can't change design on daily basis. When we started making Arjuna our choice was Rifled gun, and we build our platform on that choice...

Rifled gun has more accuracy (Under same condition) and better penetration power. Look at the evolution of Guns, rifling the barrel was stepping stone in accuracy and penetration.

When we started our design, Firing missile (from Tank) was not priority. Any way if Army induct 1000+ Aarjuna Tank, DRDO ,may decide to give next 500 Tanks with smooth bore..

Any way all is my assumption.. Who knows what is in Army mind.. :)

Some Angry comments from Internet, Hope it may add some value..

the main feature of ARJUN tank is its capability of firing on move, the whole tank has been built on this feature. They added air suspension to provide proper stability on three axis to enable better accuracy for firing on the move, but none of these so called army specialists even point it out on the show. The main reason for the weight increase is this feature, but then our so called specialists do not even speak a word on this

ARJUN has 4 crew and that is how army wanted it. Any engineer will point out that with the increase in the number of crew the size and so the weight will increase accordingly. And none, i mean none of the hosts point it out. What are these guys afraid of, may be the russi lobby or some envelopes passed under the desk???

The doubt some have here is how is it possible to fire a missile from a rifled gun like the one on the Arjun MkII? Well, the point to note is that the missile is launched encased in a sabot which is allowed to rotate independently of the missile.

I hope that clears it up!
