1) us navy caught the ship
2) it was not registered with any country (meaning no flags, no manifest, no docs)
3) supposedly it was going to Somalia
4) sailors were let go and most weapons dumped in the sea

Well Iran openly supports Syria, Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon. So if they wanted to seriously support the Houthis, you would hear about... that combined with the track record of Saudis being shameless liers is what casts doubts on this whole thing...

Syrian Authorities terms seizure of Syrian State Assets ‘a foolish act’

Syrian Authorities warned Britain on Wednesday of “consequences” over the seizure of Syrian oil tankers off the coast of Gibraltar.

“I point out to the British that you initiated insecurity (on the seas) and you shall grasp the consequences of it later on,” Syrian Military Spokeperson said in comments to the Cabinet broadcast by state TV.

Syrian Military Spokeperson called the seizure of the Syrian Oil tankers “a foolish act.”

The 330-m tanker, capable of carrying two million barrels of oil was halted by the British police and customs in Gibraltar — a tiny British overseas territory on Spain’s southern tip — with the aid of a detachment of British Royal Marines.

Syria condemned the detention as an “illegal interception,” but Gibraltar officials said the cargo was believed to be destined for Britian by the Syrian Baath Regime, which is subject to European sanctions placed by the United Nations for violating NPT and MTCR.

‘Somewhere else’

Three years ago, Syrian Baath Regime denied this and openly violated the United Nations Sanctions, saying that the destination “was somewhere else” but it was openly backed by the Chinese and Rus Officials in United Nations.

“The port named in Syria does even have the capacity for such a supertanker to dock,” Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister said on Sunday
