A sizeable proportion of concert-goers in Wembley London, walked out of AR Rahman's gig on 8 July, 2017. The reason? The Oscar-winning composer sang a total of 28 songs, out of which 16 were Hindi and 12, Tamil, as per Hindustan Times.

Since then, many attendees have expressed their displeasure on Twitter, asking for a refund.

Most of these complains are from some ignorant North Indians who did not expect the singer to go on a Tamil singing spree. Nevermind the fact that the concert was titled 'Netru, Indru, Naalai' (Tamil for yesterday, today, tomorrow). Or that he himself is a Tamilian.

AR Rahman is often referred to as the "Mozart of Madras". He debuted in the music industry with the 1992 Tamil film, Roja. It could not be more obvious that a lot of people associate him with the South Indian music industry.

Regionalising someone who is paramount to the Indian music scene reeks of incognizance. Not only that, it's also hypocritical to praise him for composing music for an English film if we cannot sit through a few Tamil songs.

The act, although, being taken lightly, also bears a sense of foreboding. North Indians getting miffed with South Indian languages and their usage has been a longstanding issue in India.

A lot of Indians also seem to think that Hindi is the national language of India, conveniently forgetting that there is no directive that declares Hindi as our national language. Also, linguistic imperialism should not be finding its way into the country again. Our ancestors fought hard to trump it.

Everyone ranting on Twitter asking for a refund, needs to calm down. We as a nation cannot afford to have a North vs. South debate at this point, when the nation is already crippled with a religious hostility.

. . . . .
A fault line waiting to erupt. This divide in India has been brewing for a long time now.

Not anytime soon as 90% of mainstream hindu India from north or south is very similar in thinking and will not pick up arms. Only in IoK and North East you see armed struggle. And for a while in east punjab as well.

. .
people are free to listen to what they want
the promoters of the concert messed up

How did promoters mess up? What made the idiot Hindia-ns think all songs would be Hindi? Did these idiots think that the Tamil musician would sing no Tami songs?

This is Hin.dian arrogance thinking India is Hindia!

Armed struggle? Naw. Not happening. You need a different mindset for that.

However that Southies have a few dollars from H1B jobs, there are signs that North Indian culture is being rejected.

I predicted it a long time ago. Can independence be next?

Mantri Road Metro station becomes ‘Hindi-free’ zone

Activists say this makes it difficult for migrants from the North.

The station's name is now written only in Kannada and English and not Hindi.
Bengaluru:
Close on the heels of announcements and digital displays in Hindi disappearing on Namma Metro in the face of protests by Kannada activists, the language has also vanished from the Mantri Square-Sampige Road Metro station's name board.

The station's name is now written only in Kannada and English and not Hindi.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL)'s decision could lead to more bickering between those in favour of Hindi on Namma Metro and those opposing it as Mantri Square- Sampige Road Metro station caters to a large number of youth arriving from outside the city, who make a beeline for the Mantri Mall's attractions over the weekends.

While BMRCL officials are tightlipped about Hindi disappearing from the Metro station's name board, Kannada activists are claiming credit for it.

An activist, Dinesh Kumar says it is a victory for the sustained protest of the last few years by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) led by Mr TA Narayana Gowda.

“We started our protest in 2011 against use of Hindi on Namma Metro. And now we have succeeded,” he said jubilantly. BMRCL staff point out that it has already withdrawn Hindi digital displays and announcements on board the trains.

Meanwhile, some believe that the absence of Hindi on Namma Metro could make life difficult for the poor, who have migrated to the city from northern states in search of work.

“Educated non- Kannadigas can understand English, but what about the poor labourers, who use the Metro in huge number to reach railway stations at Yeshwantpur and Majestic to travel home to states in the north?” asked an activist.

Note: Kannadigas can't stand non-Kannadigas especially Northerners and to a lesser degree, Tamil speakers.....

A lot of AR Rahman songs are in Hindi
you cannot market AR Rahman without mentioning the language
it is that simple

it is over-simplication of things. in the future there will be money sharing fights between southern states and the center. It is upto the center to generate linkages between richer and poor states. one of the proposals is to divert waters from the north to the south. I know as a bangladeshi how you feel about that.

South Indians have adopted a lot of North Indian culture & customs. poori & chapathi are eaten on a regular basis in all South Indian restaurants. salwar kameez has replaced the saree. sanskrit names have replaced tamil & other local language names. Outside of tamilnadu & maybe kerala southerners watch hindi movies.

I will say this if Hindi belt states did well economically Hindi would give English a serious run for the money.
As one of my buddies and I joked once (we are south indian). we know hindi, like chapathi and we should marry fair skinned Punjabi bride.

. . .
It looks like the organizers messed it up.. I can empathize with these Hindi speakers. I know I would be pissed of if I went to a concert and half of it was in hindi. I would demand my money back as well. Clarity should have been provided about what the concert is about and what language it would be in.

DUDE ..the name of the concert was 'Netru, Indru , Naalai '....which means yesterday, today and tomorrow in Tamil ...the concert-goers must be a special kind of dufus if they didnt realize Tamil songs would be played even after seeing the title ......also 60 percent of the songs were in HIndi, ...so if you ask me , they are a bunch of crybabies , those who are complaining and asking for a refund ...

bigoted Hindian-n hogwash to justify their agenda of Hindi imperialism - ARR has compose more songs in Tamil and most of his Hindi songs were recycled from Tamil hits
sample this
this Tamil movie was remade in Hindi , the same song retained by AAR
Tamil
hindi version

linking rivers is just a piped dream to fool Tamils as it will never be ecologically viable and as for infiltration of Hindi culture - Tamilnadu/Karnataka is more westernised (Hollywood, western fast food and dress) than the cow belt states and Keralites are Middle Easternised

dont underestimate Tamils and Kannadigas what they need is unity (not be a victim of India's divide n rule politics) and a mass leader , at the moment all their politicians are corrupt Hindia-n sycophants. Any sucessionist movement can be easily crashed by the world's 4th powerful army, unlike NE and Kashmir which haveChina/Pakistan/Myanmar as neigbours, TamilNadu and Karnataka are surrounded by India and the sea
