Another Indian Army Soldier Commits Suicide
By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, Sept 16: Failing to cope with the stress and strain, an Indian army soldier committed suicide while a para-military soldier shot himself and was critically injured, in Kashmir.

Reports said that an Indian army soldier (a signal man) identified as Brajesh Kohar was deployed inside the camp near Birpur, Bari Brahmana in Jammu province. While on duty the soldier fired a bullet from his service rifle towards himself. The bullet hit his forehead and the soldier died on the spot.

Police have registered a case and started investigations to ascertain the reason behind the soldier taking such an extreme step.

It has been learned that the soldier was unmarried and rejoined back on September 8 after availing leave. He hailed from the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

An Indian army spokesman confirmed the incident. He said that a court of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind it.

In a related incident, an Indian para-military soldier was critically injured after he shot at himself with his service weapon in the border district of Kupwara.

The Indian paramilitary soldier identified as Sepoy Shalinder (Belt No. 970059604 of 67 Bn BSF) was injured when he shot himself with his service weapon inside the camp at Karnah in Kupwara. "The injured soldier was removed to Indian army's base hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar, where he is undergoing treatment".

Police have registered a case and started investigations.

More than three dozen Indian army and para-military soldiers have committed suicide in restive Kashmir during the past eight months. Some Indian army officers also committed suicide.

Experts say that long absence from the family with danger lurking everywhere as they go out on patrol and counter-insurgency operations puts enormous strains on the soldiers, pushing some of them to commit suicide. Soldiers are now allowed to talk with their family members on the phone regularly. However, these measures have not had much positive impact as the soldiers deployed in violence hit Kashmir continue to commit suicide.

Fayaz Wani reports on life in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Depressed, they are!

No.

The standards are going down!

More emphasis is on education than being tough and robust, mentally and physically!

Urban vs rural!

Just as those blokes who surrendered to the Taliban.

Not bothered about the country and more concerned about self! Same is with Indians I presume.

Interesting. Pakistan has started doing that quite a few years ago.

Just as those blokes who surrendered to the Taliban.

Old tricks. :D

.
That was a tactical maneuver, the end result is that they are alive.

I am a military man and if that is a 'tactical manoeuvre', then I have to be reborn!

Why have an army if the aim is to stay alive and not implement the govt's order?

I fail to see the logic!

It must be remembered that the govt is supreme over the military. At least that is the legacy that India and Pakistan inherited.

Phone calls to the family members would help.

But to what extent?

Human beliefs will come out no matter if your a Hindu, Christian or a Jew, that a final solution because of the government interests is not a solution to the core problems. The more you oppress, worst the results you will recieve.

See it in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Luckily NATO forces are more educated and have technology advantages to see their loved ones.

Nothing will help.

The real truth is that the people have gone soft and cannot face the hardship.

Too much of Americanism!

Malls, discos, Big Mac.

When I was young to fly was an experience of the rich.

Today, with the budget airlines, who goes by train?

The world has changed and people must accept this or the Forces do a reformation programme to save the nation!

In the gone by days, it was a matter of pride to die for one's country and today, we are worried about bodybags (thanks to Vietnam and such silly sentiments).

"Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori" is the only answer.

I think its more than that. Indian soldiers have been facing terrorists for 20 years now. A short war is one thing, but a neverending insurgency is a pretty hopeless situation to be in.

The modern soldier views army as a career, and is less willing to sacrifice his life and death for the country, especially when he is aware of the abysmal ethical standards of his masters in the government.
This is a fallout of a modern civil society, better education and awareness, and is to be expected.
The only solution is for the army to equip its soldiers better, pay them higher salaries, and treat them like valuable assets, not expendable material like during the world wars.

In modern warfare, the goal of a soldier is not to die for is country but to stay alive and ensure that the opposing soldier dies.

Marathaman,

I salute your sentiments.

That will never happen.

That is the reality and one has to live with it!

Salim sir...its got to happen sometime or the other. Indian army has to learn to fight a modern war at some point of time. It cannot fight the same way as 50 years ago and claim to be a world power.
If things continue to stay stagnant...no young Indian will want to join the army. It is happening already with a serious shortfall of quality officers in the army. The government has begun to hike salaries...but a lot more needs to be done if we want talented and ethical people to enlist in the army.

Future wars will be more brain and less brawn. It wil be about tactics and smart thinking, not brute force. We need to make radical changes if Indian army wishes to stay a formidable force in the 21st century.

Patton:
In war, its not the job of soldier to die and become a martyr for his country, but to make sure the other b*stard dies for his :D

. .
That is a cute statement of Patton, but stoic cannot be abandoned for merely brains!

Should I say, "Been there, done that?"

I am no Hercules or Samson. I have faced the same rigours as these soldier/ paramilitary has faced. I have gone into CASOs. I have done what they do. I have never felt the urge to commit suicide. My men have not committed suicide and we were in CI and then in active combat.

The majority of my career has been Kashmir in all its avatars!

So why the hell should these blokes commit suicide in a CI environment and who have not even seen the reality of life?

I require no education on modern warfare!

Softies and poorly motivated will remain softies and poorly motivated, modern or archaic warfare!
