What's new

Another Bangladesh emerging from Bay of Bengal.

You are projecting a scenario upon which there are plenty of debate about the provability and magnitude.Even global warming is not universally accepted theory. There are plenty of report from scientist, who are claiming a future cooling of the planet or mini ice age. There are many scientist who are hopeful for a future stable climate with the prudent application of environmental engineering.Currently there are many places in the world which are at below sea level and thriving. It would not be difficult to protect many densely populated coastal areas including Bangladesh with global commitment and application of science and technology if the worst happen.

Its just hypothetical scenario. Nothing is established 100%, I myself have read the climate change papers and know just how vague some of the models are given our limited understanding.

True.Western media have found a perfect scapegoat in Bangladesh as the common people don't know much about this country or known for natural disaster and other poverty related issues. So they using Bangladesh to scare the western public to compel their govt. to do something about climate change. In the God less West, climate change, Gay rights etc. are new religion upon which their passions are overflowing.Bangladesh related reports usually comes around the corner when a major climate conference take place somewhere and they need to influence public opinion or policy maker to cut the carbon emission or impose the Carbon tax.

They are a demeaning bunch paid by vested interests to divert attention from the big scams they are pulling on their own people. Best to ignore them and consult the best scientists, researchers and engineers directly in the concerned areas.

Bangladesh is much more low land compared to most parts of Bengal. Besides, even if Bengal sinks with Bangladesh; we will still have our country, Bangladesh on the other hand would cease to exist as a country. :)

The Ganga–Brahmaputra rivers contribute nearly 1000 million tons of sediment every year. Now, how many years it will take to fill an area, 20 km x 5 km = 100 sq. km of low land with a 4 meter thick silt? The volume is, (100 sq. km x 1000 m x 1000 m) x 4 m thick = 400,000,000 m3. Unit weight of soil being 1.6 t/m3, the total weight of this volume becomes, (400,000,000m3 x 1.6)= 640 million tons.

Now, how many years it will take to fill the area of 100 km2 with a 4 m thick silt. Divide 640 million tons by 1000 million tons. The result is, (640/1000)= less than 1 year. BD can reclaim 1000 km2 of land and raise it to above 4 m higher than the MSL every ten years.

We thank the generosity of India for sending us 1000 million tons of silt gift to our country every year. In reality, India helped BD accumulate more sediments within the land mass after it built that Farakka. The construction slowed down the velocity of water that caused less sediments into the BoB and more sediments within BD river/land system. So, Farakka has another Bumerang effect on India. BD is rising higher every year when Indians everywhere are praying in earnest for its demise by an assumed submergence of Bangladesh by tidal waves from the BoB.

Viva Bangladesh!!!

Bangladesh has a vested interest in it as well. Our plan is to extract as much money as possible as compensation. We inflate the situation.

We lose few lands to the mighty rivers every year. People living their become homeless. The world takes notice and terms them climate refugees.

However Formation of lands is more than the lose by 16 sq km. And the report mentions Bangladesh should quickly find a way to stop that erosion by rivers which will add to the net gain of land. Also the lost lands are more valuable as people were living there.

Where exactly is most of the land being lost in Bangladesh? Is it before or after the main rivers join together near Dhaka?

Is the Jamuna river...

Newly formed lands will be given to the economic zones and other economic activities. Those lands will become highly protected and net gain will improve gradually.

We also need the west...the money from the climate fund has financed some very good research in crop adaptation...they have made multiple varieties of rice that can be grown on land with salt water.

Never said isolate yourselves completely. Play it smart

You are a part of a political union...Punjab is not your country..neither is Kerala....you have never faced wide scaled disaster like the 70s cyclone....trust me they won't save you just like their Punjabi brethren from the other side left us to die.

I have heard this kind of a statement quite a few times from Bangladeshis, and only from Bangladeshis.....and I am yet to comprehend this mindset. Maybe because we don't think in that manner. Kerala and Punjab is as much my country as Dhaka, Barishal or Comilla is yours.

Do you not find it odd that India does not have a national language? One Indian is not able to talk to another unless they know a common foreign language such as English.

I dont blame you for thinking like this as you were born into a union called India, but it is out of place in this world of nation states.

There is no national language for the US either.

What a stupid argument.

Imposing of one national language by force on pre-1971 Pakistan was one of the reasons leading to the breakup of your former country.

So yeah no thanks. We are getting along fine without a national language....and plenty of official ones.

No wonder your country files 2 patents a year. Cant think beyond your little well.

Stop the semantics dude as everyone in the US speaks English apart from new immigrants.

How ironic then that the county in South Asia that imposed one national language broke up....but the one that didn't...is still around in original guise (and was instrumental in helping the breakup of the former happen)....and the latter is now adding total output of either one of the former's current constituents to its own...and that will probably be both combined in the coming decade.

I know you lot feel language is your national ethos without which you would be lost....not the case with India....we are too large and farseeing to care much about having one national language. We would rather continue to invest in improving our institutions so we continue to produce capable leaders in politics, business and society.....unlike the puny neighbour that has one national language but is run by our servant lady (because of its crap institutions in general) and had to suffer 3 million dead because of the very concept of one national language in its first guise.

I bet you did not know that in several US states, various courts allow Spanish to be the language of proceedings given there is no federally stated national language. It is left up to each state to decide, just like India.

I am ignoring your comments on former Pakistan and current BD as most of it is inaccurate.

The US is not exactly the poster-boy for multiculturism with white cops shooting blacks and blacks shooting white cops in retaliation. It's rapidly growing Hispanic population will add another element that will cripple and eventually destroy what made US powerful.

As for you defending India to the core, you would of course. You were unfortunate to be born into an anomaly that is India and have no real identity in this world. How do you answer the question of what is an Indian? You cannot as it is an artificial construct borne out of hundreds of years of Muslim and then British colonialism. I really pity Indians, I really do.
